Contrary to popular belief urinary incontinence is not a disease that plagues the old, and it is not a natural process that occurs with aging. It occurs in children, adolescent, young adults, middle age adults, as well as senior citizens. It occurs in both men and women, however, it does occur more often in women than men.
Urinary incontinence is a symptom of another problem that involves the urinary tract. The urinary tract consist of the kidneys, ureter tubes (2), bladder, and the urethra. Bacteria is the underlining cause behind urinary tract infections; oftentimes bacteria will enter the urinary tract through the urethra and travel through the urinary tract up to the bladder, and in some cases up to the kidneys. Without receiving medical treatment in a timely fashion the kidneys can become permanently damaged and unable to function properly.
The kidneys are responsible for cleansing the blood of all waste, excess water, and other impurities, all the while putting back into the blood useful elements (sodium, phosphate, potassium) in the proper proportion that is needed in order to keep the body running smoothly. The kidneys also release several vital hormones that are necessary and critical in keeping the body healthy and functioning well. Without the proper functioning of the kidneys death is imminent, that is why dialysis machines are so important to those whose kidneys have failed; without dialysis the blood would continue to carry waste and other impurities throughout the body and back to the heart, which would result in death in a very short time. The only other alternative to being on a dialysis machine is to receive a kidney transplant, however, it is possible for a person to live a normal life with only one good kidney.
For men who suffer with urinary incontinence their quality of life has been altered significantly. To avoid the possibility of public and social embarrassment some men choose to live their lives in isolation and seclusion which all too often leads to emotional and psychological disorders that only add to their level of misery. Families become torn and heartbroken while their love one agonize in a self imposed prison that seemingly offers no way out.

There are medical procedures today that was not available just a short time ago, and in addition to medical procedures there are a number of medications that have proven effective in the management and control of urinary leakage.
