Paris region attracts around 45 million tourists per year, out of which 60% comes from other countries. Paris is a city of many iconic landmarks, museums, cathedrals, and other famous institutions.

Notre Dame de Paris is one famous Catholic cathedral situated in Paris. Here is a brief description about this place.

About Notre Dame Cathedral:

Your trip to Paris is incomplete without a visit to this wonder of gothic architecture. It is one of the world’s most beautiful cathedrals situated in Europe. Other attractions which might take away your breath are dramatic towers, spire, stained glass and statuary.

The Notre Dame Cathedral was once the heartbeat of Paris. It took almost 100 years to build this place. It was restored and saved from destruction by one of the France’s most famous architectures. The name Notre Dame means "Our Lady" in French and is also used in Catholic Church buildings. Notre Dame de France was one of the first constructed Gothic cathedrals in the Gothic period.

The heavy influence of naturalism can be seen in the use of stained glass in the sculptures. It was of the first buildings to use the art of flying buttress (arched exterior supports).

The cathedral suffered devastation during the phase of French Revolution in the 1790’s, when much of its religious imagery was destroyed. During the 19th century, a program was started to restore its previous state.

There are five bells at the Notre Dame. The Emmanuel, also called great bourdon bell is located in the South tower which weighs over 13 tons, and is toiled to mark the beginning of the day and mark the hours of the day. It is also used on several occasions and services. There are four other bells present in the North tower which are swing chimed.

In an all this Cathedral is one of the biggest landmarks of culture of France. If you are visiting to Paris, then don’t forget to see this place.
