We all get one set of permanent teeth. It's our responsibility to care for them so they can last until we no longer need them anymore. Your teeth will benefit from a solid dental hygiene routine, such as brushing and flossing, but making those visits to your dentist every six months are also crucial. When you consider the fact that tooth loss is usually caused by gum disease and tooth decay, you will want to take extra care.
Cavities are another way to refer to tooth decay, and plaque is the culprit behind it, giving your teeth an unsightly white film. The conditions which allow plaque to form are the presence of bacteria in your mouth as well as the consumption of saliva and food. The fragments left behind from food combines with saliva, which breeds the perfect conditions for plaque. That's why it's so important to brush after meals. As you consume foods heavy in starch or sugar, acids can be produced that will wear away at your enamel, which coats your teeth.
During these attacks, the enamel is weakened and dissolved, leaving the tooth vulnerable to cavities. A buildup of plaque also can lead to gum disease. If plaque does not get taken off the teeth by a brush and by flossing every day, it will form tarter, which will build up where the gums meet the teeth. The earliest stage of gum disease is gingivitis, where gums become swollen and bleed when brushed or flossed.
Eventually, gingivitis will continue until it develops into Periodontitis, which eats away at the connective tissues in your teeth and forms pockets of bacteria. Periodontitis not only affects the teeth and gums, but also the jawbone and surrounding tissues so that teeth are prone to falling out.
To control plaque and tartar buildup, teeth must be properly maintained at home. Visits to the dentist for regular cleanings are also in order. For the most effective cleaning, your toothbrush should be held at a slight angle as short back-and-forth motions brush the teeth. Be sure to brush every part of your teeth that you can, including your tongue, trying not to spend less than two minutes doing it. By brushing your tongue, you will rid yourself of bacteria that causes bad breath. Ideally, you should brush each time you eat, but twice a day is adequate for most people.
Use a soft bristle brush only. A stiffer brush will result in damage to the gums. As the bristles become weak around every 3-4 months, you should get a new tooth brush. Many people mistakenly think that using an electric toothbrush does the entire cleaning job. This is a myth. The single efficacious method for eliminating plaque at the gum line as well as between your teeth is through routine brushing and flossing. You may also utilize an interdental brush for tough to reach spots.
To get the best results in flossing, follow these tips from the experts! Step one, place a lengthy piece of floss in the space where teeth meet. Now slowly work the floss up and down repeatedly. You'll want to wind the floss around the gum line, where it meets your tooth. Move between teeth, using a clean section of floss each as you go along. Get in between all teeth and behind the teeth at the back of the mouth.
If your teeth are close together, waxed floss will slide much easier between the teeth. If you have trouble holding and using floss correctly, ask your dentist or hygienist what the best approach would be and whether a floss holder would be more effective. If you haven't been flossing regularly, you may experience sore or bleeding gums for a few days, if the problem continues, contact your dentist. In addition to brushing and flossing, is your diet. Cavities are brought on by the consumption of overly sugary foods and drinks, due to the acids that are produced. On the other hand, some foods can help prevent decay. One option is to eat some aged cheese right after the other foods, as it can neutralize the acid that is damaging the enamel.
Apples, pears and other crunchy fruits water down sugars in food. These fruits are high in water and this provokes saliva. Saliva rinses away food pieces. Sugar-free gum helps encourage mucous and also moves out organisms that cause cavities. Dairy products and veggies that are full of calcium, or supplemental calcium pills will keep your teeth healthy and strong. Fluoride is also a great way to stop tooth decay.
Fluoride mouthwash or a fluoride application done by a dental professional are ways to get fluoride if there is not any in your water. Keep your teeth healthy by scheduling dental visits twice a year. And if any area of your mouth is sore, you notice a change in bite, or you experience bleeding gums, see your dentist in between regular checkups as well. Keeping with a steady dental regime, both at home and with your dentist, will ensure the longevity of your teeth.
