Do Binaural Beats Really Help With Lucid Dreaming?

Many people find it difficult to reliably and regularly have lucid dreams. In fact, there are a large number of people who, try as they might, have never been able to have a single lucid dream to date.

Could binaural beats be the answer? Could they offer a way for you to have lucid dreams more easily? How effective are they at doing this?

What Are Binaural Beats?

Binaural beats are the most popular method of a concept known as "brainwave entrainment". Brainwave entrainment is the process where some stimulus is used in order to make the brain enter a particular state where specific types of brainwaves are emitted.

The most effective and accessible methods of brainwave entrainment are binaural beats. Binaural beats are a type of audio where two different frequencies are played to the left and right ears. The difference between the frequencies is interpreted by the brain which then tries to synchronize with the beats.

For example, beta waves are associated with being active and focused on a task at hand. To put the brain in such a state you might play binaural beats of frequencies 100 Hz and 115 Hz. The difference of 15 Hz is in the beta wave range and the brain will synchronize to this "beat frequency" value.

What Is Lucid Dreaming?

Lucid dreaming is a type of dream where you are aware that you are dreaming. Hence, you are able to control your dreams.

People have different rationales for lucid dreaming. Some use lucid dreams purely for recreation. Others use them to aid in self discovery or self improvement.

How Can Binaural Beats Be Used To Induce Lucid Dreaming?

You may already know that the brain goes through various stages while in a state of sleep. For example, sleep study scientists measure brainwaves to identify which stage of sleep a person is in.

Binaural beats recording designed to induce lucid dreaming do so by first putting your brain into low frequency theta/delta states that are associated with deep relaxation and dreaming. Depending on the audio that you purchase, some will then take a varying path such as changing to a higher, more active frequency before once again returning to the lower frequency states.

How To Obtain Binaural Beats For Lucid Dreaming

If you walk down to your local music store then you will probably be unsuccessful. The standard method of obtaining these beats is via the Internet. As with most music downloads, the file size is fairly low and you can be listening to your beats within a few minutes of purchase rather than waiting for delivery of a CD or other physical medium.
