A crown, when cemented into place, fully encases the visible portion of the natural tooth above the gum line. There are metal and porcelain crowns, but porcelain crowns are the preferred type, since they most closely resemble natural teeth.

There are many reasons why a person may need a crown. Broken or severely worn down teeth, decayed teeth, misshapen, or discolored teeth can be repaired with a crown. Some teeth have so many fillings that a crown can be used to cover and protect what little tooth there is left.

There is no reason to delay having your teeth fixed. The procedure is usually pretty simple. There are generally just two dentist visits required. Then he will make a temporary crown that will be put in place while the permanent crown is carefully made. On your second visit, he will check the fit and color of the permanent crown and cement it into place.

There is no special care needed for porcelain crowns. As long as you practice good oral hygiene, like brushing, flossing, and regular cleanings, you have nothing to worry about.
