Situated in the province of Málaga, Benalmadena is a town about 5 miles from the city of Málaga. It has a normal population of about 53000 people which soars to thousands more in the tourist season. As in most of Spain, the highest temperatures occur around July and August while the lowest is in January. The best time to visit Benalmadena is in early July because the temperature is warm and comfortable, increasing slightly as August approaches.

Many Invaders

Benalmadena has a history of invasions that have left their marks on the city. Phoenicians, then Romans followed by the Moors have passed through this city.

A Variety of Cuisines

One of the distinguishing marks of Benalmadena is the variety of cuisines available. If you prefer to have a taste of authentic Spanish cooking, you can do so in the many restaurants that offer typical Spanish dishes such as seafood and tasty gazpachos accompanied by a bottle of cold sangria. If you have a sudden desire to sample Italian, Mexican, Indian or even Chinese cuisine, you can do so as well.

The Cable Car

No visit to Benalmadena can be complete without a trip on the cable car between the mountain of Caramolo and Tivoli World, a theme park with entertainment for the entire family. From the cable car you can see the Costa del Sol with its white beaches and catch a glimpse of the faraway mountains of the African continent.

Museums

Some other places that you are sure to find interesting are the Archaeological Museum with its display of artifacts from the Bronze Age right down to the age of the Moorish conquest. The Aquarium has a wonderful collection of different species from Spanish waters and far beyond. The Torre Quebrada Watchtower is also a tourist attraction that you should see. Built as part of an early warning system against the attacks of pirates from the Barbary Coast, it is now one of the attractions of Benalmadena.

Sports

The Municipal Sports Center is the place to go if you want to keep in shape during your stay in Benalmadena. In this facility you can practice a variety of sports such as football, tennis, aerobics, volleyball and many others. You can also enjoy a game of golf if you prefer this type of entertainment.

Shopping

You can also go shopping or just browse among the goods on display at the many markets. On Sundays Tivoli World hosts a car boot market where you can find a variety of objects. Paloma Park holds a flea market on Thursdays where you can buy something interesting or just look at the offerings. On Fridays it is the turn of the Municipal Market to put its wares on display.
