Searching a particular book amongst thousands of titles is easy with International Standard Book Number, commonly known as ISBN. Basically, this is a 13 digit number assigned which is divided into four or five parts. Every edition and variation of a book except reprints is assigned this unique number. This number makes books searchable over a database or the internet.
Components Of ISBN
There are usually the following parts of an ISBN number that indicate the details and information about that book. These are:
1.The Group Identifier: It identifies the geographic grouping of publishers.
2.The Publisher Code: Every publisher has a unique code. This number indicates a particular publisher.
3.The Book Title: A particular edition or title is identified by this number.
4.A Check Digit: This is a single digit number which validates the ISBN number.
Earlier, it used to be a nine-digit number but now it has been made a 13-digit one. This change was made applicable from January 1, Year 2007. This number is significant for publishers, libraries, retailers, wholesalers, and publishers. These days, this number has become compulsory if you plan to sell your books through any online site. For submitting in libraries too, you need to have this number on your books.
