Can you save energy in your home without spending a single cent? Oh, yes you can! With the economy still declining with fuel prices rising constantly, and while the rate of unemployment continues to startle everyone, money becomes a big issue to everyone. The only solution to our financial problems is to cut back on unnecessary costs or expenses and that includes your monthly energy consumption.
Did you know that an average American household uses around $2,000 worth of energy every year? These households also emit 26,000 pounds of carbon dioxide annually! Before you start gasping repeatedly in shock, know that there are a number of effective products and time-tested techniques available to help households become more energy efficient.
I will share to you my experience-tested techniques on how to save energy at home without spending money at all:
-
Reduce your water temperature to at least 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
-
Reduce your thermostat to 1 degree during winter, that way you will not be able to feel a slight difference of the temperature.
-
20 percent of the total energy cost is being eaten by your refrigerator. That is why it is important that your refrigerator should maintain the right temperature between 38-42 degrees Fahrenheit and the freezer’s temperature should be set between 0-5 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not forget to regularly clean your refrigerator and its condenser coils. The refrigerator motor tends to exert more power if dust and other particles can build up in its condenser coils. It is advisable clean the condenser coils at least once every two months.
-
There are many energy efficient appliances available in the market. It would be better to replace your television, electric iron, air conditioner, refrigerator and other appliances with old models. Look for the energy saver logo when you want to purchase any electronic devices or appliances, the energy saver logo ensures the consumer that the product they purchasing consumes 20-30 percent less than what federal standards require.
-
Make sure that your appliances and heating and cooling systems are properly maintained.
-
Teach your children or other household members to switch off the television if they are not watching. This is an effective way on how to save energy up to 5 percent because our kids have the tendency to waste energy more than adults.
-
Hang your clothes outside to dry it. Avoid using your dryer when the sun is out.
-
Try to minimize your use of air-conditioners. Use your electric fan in the evening or you can open your window to let cool air in. The air conditioner which is used for heating your room during winter and cooling your home on summer days is a giant eater of energy and is responsible 43% of your total monthly utility bill.
These are small things that you can do to help make a difference; small things that will not hurt your budget or burn through your pockets. In fact, these energy saving tips can even help you reduce your energy consumption to help you save money.
