How Can I Prevent My Kitten Or Adult Cat From Suckling?

There are two reasons why kittens may have a suckling problem; you can determine this by looking at these two reasons. The first would be if your kitten had been breast fed for too long. This is often the case when the mom wouldn't wean them, maybe because they grew up in the streets or maybe they didn't have enough food to eat. Mothers will continue to breast feed their young often past the stage of being babies, this is to stop them from hollering or crying when they are hungry.

Often the other reason for a suckling kitten or cat, maybe they were taken away from their mom too early. This may be displayed by their continued scratching at the water bowl or scratching at the floor, this is a sign of a kitten looking for a place to hide their face the way they would hide under their mother while suckling. That means they were taken away from their mom at an early age and they were never weaned. Their little minds and bodies were still in need of being nurtured by the mom.

The best ways to overcome this problem is to find toys for them to play with, maybe a rubber toy they can chew or suck. Get their minds off of nursing and off of breast feeding, and wean them with toys. Also, make sure you have a good supply of kitten food, and make sure they are well feed.

If they continue, these bad habits they will knock over their water bowl, they may begin scratching you, your friends, they may even suckle on your children, therefore, give them food and toys or they will find their own object to suckle on.

The best type of toys to buy are the chewy toys for them to bite, this will takes their attention away from suckling.
