Many people will concede that location is a dealmaker or dealbreaker when it comes to buying a house. Many people who will admit that they made a poor decision when they bought a house will also admit that they didn't think the location of the property through. Say for example that you're planning to buy Punta Gorda real estate. As you look through Punta Gorda homes for sale, you'll find homes that are beautiful and are, technically your dream homes. However, what completes the "dream home puzzle" is whether it's located in a good neighborhood. If it isn't, it's better to rethink your options at this point before you commit to anything.

It's not surprising that a lot of people turn to technology to help them find the house that they want to buy. On the internet there are websites that can help rate a neighborhood. Even mobile devices already have applications that can help with finding good neighborhoods based on ratings from other people. Of course, technology can only bring you so much information and point you towards the right direction in terms of your home search. It's more important that you do your own legwork when it comes to determining whether the neighborhood is good or not.

Unfortunately, your real estate agent cannot provide you with such information because there are laws against it. Here are a few things you can do yourself in determining if the neighborhood is a good find:

  1. Most houses are occupied - When you come across a neighborhood that has a lot of empty houses for sale, it's usually not a very encouraging sight. While it's true that you may find affordable homes there, it may also be true that there could be persuasive reasons why a lot of people are selling their property (and not many are buying). If a neighborhood is a good one, you'll find that there are people occupying most houses and the local economy is bustling and people are not leaving their homes. Empty houses drag the value of houses in the neighborhood down. It's a veritable domino effect. It's not a good idea to buy a house in a neighborhood that's not doing well.

  2. Homes are well-maintained - Good neighbors keep their property clean and well-maintained. This means that they are interested in keeping the neighborhood looking presentable and keeping the values of the houses in it up, along with theirs. If people inthe neighborhood don't care enough about their homes to care for their property, it's a sign that the neighborhood has a problem. Of course you'll find one neighbor or two who just won't get on the bandwagon, but if if it's more of a rule rather than an exception, then it's not a good trend in the neighborhood.

  3. Clean, orderly schools nearby - It's always a good idea to find a home that is relatively near a school area. It helps keep the value of the house up. However, one sign of a good neighborhood is peaceful-looking and well-kept schools. Try to locate teh nearest schools in the neighborhood and check whether they give you a good impression.
