It is easy to declutter your paperwork and other paper items. Unfortunately, I have found that paper is something that usually accumulates quickly. Whether it be junk mail, bank statements, tax returns or sales receipts, these are some of the items that most people end up with a lot of.

I know that there are some things (like tax returns) that you really do need to hold on to. Therefore, I would suggest that you consider purchasing a filing cabinet to house these types of papers. Or at the very least, get a filing box. You can purchase at any local office supply or discount store.

By using a filing cabinet, you are able to easily organize papers and find them when you need them. I usually store all of my yearly tax returns, as well as sale receipts and product instruction manuals (or warranty) in the filing cabinet. That way, if I need to refer back to them or have to return an item, I can quickly get the information I need.

Just be sure to eliminate clutter in the filing cabinet whenever you can. For instance, if you no longer own any item, that you purchased in the past, then you should get rid of the receipt and other paperwork for this item. No sense keeping a receipt for something that you do not have anymore.

If you decide to hold on to sales flyers and coupons for your shopping trip, be sure that you are only holding onto current sales ads and coupons with good expiration dates. I clip coupons on a regular basis, but sometimes I do not realize how long I have had them.

That is why I go though my coupons every week or so to make sure that they have good expiration dates and I throw out any expired ones. That way, I do not get to the checkout line only to realize that the coupon I intended to use, is no longer any good.

Junk mail is another thing that tend to build up. The best way to deal with it is to go through it right away. If there is anything that you know you do not want, throw it out immediately. If there are items that you wish to keep, such as sales ads or bills, then put them in an appropriate folder in the filing cabinet, for review when you are ready.

Another great way to keep paper clutter to a minimum is to go paperless when it comes to your bank statements. If you are anything like me, I always had pile of bank statements lying around. Nowadays, most banks offer a paperless option. They will usually make your bank statements available, for long periods of time, for you to review.

Then, if you really need to print out a statement, you can do at your own discretion. And some banks will also allow you to see the front and back of checks and deposit slips, as well. Just be sure to check with your bank to see how long they keep this information. This does vary from bank to bank.
