Vietnamese Motorbike Licence, Necessary in Vietnam?

When choosing whether or not to obtain a Vietnamese motorbike licence there are a few things to consider. Firstly, there is the law of each country to consider. Secondly, do most people in Vietnam have a Vietnamese motorbike license? Thirdly, what are the possible problems that can occur if you don’t have a Vietnamese motorbike licence?

From a legal standpoint you will need a Vietnamese motorbike licence to ride in Vietnam. It is the law here in Vietnam to be licenced if you wish to ride on the roads. Vietnam is a developing country but still maintains strict laws and regulations on using vehicles ( cars and bikes ) on the road like most developed countries.

Some locals and tourists ride without a Vietnamese motorbike licence in Vietnam. In most country’s you will have certain people riding on the roads who are unlicenced. Of cause here in Vietnam it is the same. From what I see I think it is much easier to ride here in Vietnam without a Vietnamese motorbike licence. Hence the reason why some people are unlicenced riders here in Vietnam.

Is it really worth taking the risk to ride without a Vietnamese motorbike licence in Vietnam? Personally I would not do it. If you are pulled over by the police riding without a Vietnamese motorbike licence you will suffer the same penalties as the locals for doing so. Being a foreigner you may be scrutinized closer. Penalties range from heavy fines, bikes been impounded and even jail time is possible. If there was to be a serious accident your travel insurance may not cover you depending on the terms and conditions of your agreement.

Now that we have talked about the legality of not having a Vietnamese motorcycle licence, a small element of people who wish not to be licenced and the possible serious consequences of not having a licence if there were to be an accident. Now it is up to you to make the best decision whether or not you choose to obtain a Vietnamese motorcycle licence while enjoying the lovely sites of Vietnam.
