Spa stands for salus per aqua, which means healing by water. According to Wikipedia, the term spa is associated with water treatment which is also known as balneotherapy. In layman’s terms, a spa is a place where you can receive spa treatments, most commonly facial, massage, and body treatments.

A regular visit to the spa brings release of stress, rejuvenate your mind and body.

There are many types of spa in the current industry. And it's very important to know the difference so you get to enjoy what you are searching for.

Day Spa. A day spa offers spa treatments on a day-use basis. It is something that individuals can enjoy daily. The day spa can be located in a shopping mall, shop-office, office complex or any other designated commercial zone. And it typically delivers a comprehensive treatment menu which includes massage, facial, body, waxing and some form of water based treatment.

Resort/Hotel Spa. It is located within a resort or hotel. It offers spa services, fitness classes and spa cuisine. It is a great choice when one individual wants spa and the other wants to do something else like golf or tennis. It also works for business travellers and families.

Destination Spa. It's a destination of its own. It focuses in helping you to lead a healthier lifestyle by way of spa services, physical fitness activities, wellness programmes, healthy cuisine and special interest programming. Typically, more than two-night stay. Some even have a requirement of minimum stay of 3 or 7 nights. Some destination spas are located in exotic places.

Medical Spa. A medical spa, medispa or med-spa is a hybrid between a medical clinic and a day spa that operates under the full-time supervision of a licensed healthcare professional. It offers treatments that require a doctor's supervision, such as laser resurfacing and Botox injections. It also provides spa therapies.

Family spa. Family spa has facilities delivering complete salon and spa services for the whole family and group parties. It’s an ideal get-away for families that are seeking for a fun experience focuses on wellness, education and bonding.

The above listed the common types of spa. This is surely not an exhaustive list. There are other categories such as airport spa, casino spa and etc. that are only found in some countries.
