Like all the details in a wedding, the wedding cake follows a different tradition in different countries around the world. If you have a special wedding theme you can incorporate one of these ideas into your wedding. In France the traditional wedding cake is called a "croquembouche", it´s a tall tower of cream filled profiteroles covered with caramel. They also like cakes that start with a wide layer, topped with a smaller layer, and ending with a tiny layer. Some of these cakes can be ten layers high. In Italy, wedding cake traditions vary according to the region. One of the most popular ones is called "mille-foglia" which is a pastry based cake filled with cream, chocolate and covered with strawberries. In China, they favor huge wedding cakes and they´re called "Lapis-Surabaya". Each layer symbolizes a step towards success as a married couple. The cake is cut from the bottom up, and the first pieces are served to the parents and grandparents. In England the cake of choice is a cake made with raisins, almonds, cherries, and covered with a marzipan layer. A piece of the cake is traditionally saved for the birth of the couples first child. They call it "christening cake". In Denmark, the traditional wedding cake is called "cornucopia", it is ring shaped, made with almonds, cream, and marzipan. It is decorated with sugar and filled with fresh fruit and compote. To avoid bad luck the bride and groom cut the cake together.

Seek and You Shall Find

Before hitting the road to your local bakery or pastry shop, buy some wedding magazines or browse online for wedding cake designs. Copy or cutout the ones you like and decide with the groom on your favorites. Now you can go to the bakery or pastry shop with a clearer idea of what you like.

Square or Round

Would you prefer a tall cake in the shape of a tower? Would you like a trendy cake design? Would you choose a simple small wedding cake? Remember that the shape of the wedding cake should reflect the style and theme of your wedding.

Colors!

Close you eyes and think of your favorite color. Your cake can be decorated in just the color you thought of. There are a million options to choose from when thinking of cake decor. Some brides however prefer to coordinate their wedding cake with the color scheme of the rest of the wedding.

Flavors

There are many flavors to choose from, starting with the traditional vanilla or chocolate. Wedding cakes can be made in every flavor imaginable, carrot, pistachio, hazelnut, almond, strawberry and many more.

Wedding cakes can be expensive so before ordering your wedding cake be sure that you have an almost exact number of the guests that will be attending you wedding. If the bakery or pastry shop offers wedding cake tastings, it can help you decide on the flavor of the cake you prefer. As with all the other decisions you´ll have to make for your wedding, have fun and enjoy the experience!
