Protection Wearing basic outdoor work protection is important not only when using chainsaws, but other outdoor equipment as well. Use ear plugs or noise muffs designed for outdoor equipment use.

Eye protection is essential when using any cutting equipment. Use safety glasses or goggles that fit comfortably and do not impede vision. This is protection from sawdust, wood chips and other debris.

Arms and legs are also vulnerable to flying sawdust. Wear long sleeves and long pants when using saws to prevent splinters. Do not operate machinery in the rain or heavy fog to prevent the debris from sticking to wet skin and clothing.

The Chain The chain is the cutting surface of the chainsaw. To keep the saw from skipping, burning or snagging, the chain must be kept sharp. Use a round file to sharpen each cutting tooth of the chain. A dull chain will drag through the wood and catch easier than a sharp chain. It will not create a clean, smooth cut. It will also kick back easier, which can cause injury.

Slack in the chain will cause it to jump off the bar and to snag more easily. Keep the chain tight, but not too tight, against the bar. A chain that is too tight may snap during use. When properly tightened, the chain will not come completely off the edge of the bar. Use the bar adjuster to tighten or loosen the chain.

Oil the chain so that it runs smoothly on the bar. A dry chain catches easily. Oil also helps to keep sawdust from clogging the chain and promotes a cleaner cut. Use bar oil on the chain and bar to keep the saw running smoothly and efficiently.

Clean Housing The housing of the chainsaw where the sprocket is gets filled with sawdust and other debris after prolonged and repeated use. Too much debris will cause the sprocket to spin slower and the chain to be ineffective for cutting. Remove the housing and clean out the sawdust to keep the chainsaw running in top condition. Doing so will extend the life of the chainsaw and the sharpness of the chain. It will also make the job much easier.
