Most of us have a general understanding of what anxiety feels like. Anxiety is part of the human experience and it's normal and appropriate to feel it to different degrees in varying life situations.

An anxiety attack is on the extreme end of the spectrum. It is a sudden and acute episode of intense anxiety and feelings of panic. For some, an anxiety attack is a paralyzing and terrifying experience.

While panic attacks are not medically dangerous, they can certainly feel like it. Often people will interpret the symptoms as if they are suffering from a medical condition, like a heart attack. This is because the symptoms feel so real and physical.

Speaking in front of a group of people, for instance, will generate a certain degree of anxiety in most of us. But its usually within a healthy range and can, when channeled properly, help us perform better. It can increase our focus and respond more immediately to the task at hand.

The fear of having a panic attack is often just as prominent as the panic attack itself. In other words, it can become a vicious cycle; the fear of an anxiety attack tends to "feed" the attack itself.

Fear of an anxiety attack will often lead the sufferer to avoid certain triggering places and situations. When this happens, sufferers tend to start doing less in the "outside world" than they would normally tend to do. This can lead to a sense of isolation and deep frustration.

The best news about panic attacks is that they can be controlled without medication. In fact many anxiety disorders tend to respond well and quickly when treated properly. The other good news? The results tend to be long-lasting when executed properly. When it comes to anxiety disorders, nobody has to suffer in silence.
