It’s important to note that whatever type of liposuction you opt for, whether it is Vaser Lipo, Smartlipo or traditional liposuction, the surgeon’s aim is to make your experience as pain-free as possible during your procedure. For larger volumes of fat removal you will most likely have general anesthesia, for the more up to date sculpting procedures you will be kept comfortable with local anesthesia, and often light sedation.

What we will be discussing here is post-liposuction pain.

Often your pain is dependent on how your body handles pain (your pain threshold). There are several reasons for discomfort after liposuction – the main cause of which is the body’s natural reaction to what is effectively an injury that has been inflicted on the body. This results in bruising and swelling at the site of the liposuction procedure. This is a totally natural reaction to surgery and in most cases, cannot be avoided. In fact, it’s the body’s way of healing.

Although there is a bit of pain and discomfort associated with liposuction, it’s important to remember that this will settle, once your body heals and that, like all types of surgery, you can minimise the discomfort you feel by following the post op. rules and support you were given. You most likely were given a prescription for anti-inflammatories and pain killers. Make sure you take them as prescribed. This will certainly minimise your pain. Often you will also be given antibiotics to take for a few days. Make sure you take these to reduce the risk of infection.

You’ve probably heard the saying "There’s no gain without pain", and post operatively anyway, you can expect to have some pain. It’s important to realize that any liposuction pain you have afterwards will pass, and your new contoured body will more than make up for any discomfort you may have had.
