It's that time of year again. The time to set new goals to lose that extra pound or two gained over the holidays. How many times do we do that over and over again only to fail. The funny thing is that the meaning behind the word 'Resolution', is really "to solve again". Isn't that just what we do each year? Decided to solve our weight issues again?

This year, instead of making resolutions, let's set SMARTER goals.

One of the best methods for reaching your goals is the SMART formula. Here is one variation on the SMART goals formula.

S - Be Specific - Be clear, precise and specific when setting your goals. If you want to lose 10 pounds, set that goal. Don't just say I'm going to lose weight. If you lose a pound, then you've met that goal, but it isn't really where you wanted to be.

M - Measurable goals - Be sure to set goals with a way to take stock and measure your results. For instance, using measurable units like pounds, body fat percentage, inches and clothing sizes. Don't forget to include other health focused goals like reducing cholesterol or blood pressure.

A - Accountability - Establish accountability for yourself. Make a chart, keep a diary or utilize an online journal. Even better, involve your friends or family as accountability partners. If you have someone vested in you, you're more likely to succeed.

R - Realistic goals - Sure there are lots of people who want to lose 100 pounds and look like a body builder, but realistically that's not likely to happen. If you lose 2 pounds of fat per week, you are doing fantastic. Realistic goals are easier to keep you motivated to succeed.

T - Time bound - Be sure to set deadlines. Time limits are highly motivating. If you don't set time limits, there is no urgency. Set short term and long term goals. Set a goal to avoid fast food for a week. Set a goal for a percentage of weight lose over a month time. Just again, be sure that the goals are realistic.

E - Emotional - Emotions are the system that drives you towards a goal. Focus on what is most important to you once you attain that goal. How are you going to feel after you drop 20 pounds? What will your life look like then?

R - Review them often - You need to keep the goals you set in front of you. Focus on reading or writing your goals daily. Repetition is one of the keys to re-programming your body to break habits.

This idea is a simple formula that might not be a new idea, but the principle make sense. A goal that is strongly desired and kept in front of you every day will keep you focused and on fire. So stay focused, eat right, train hard and expect to succeed!
