Awnings attached to a home create a shaded environment over a patio or deck. These types of awnings are installed onto the side of the home and available as either retractable or stationary depending on the area and shade requirements. Awnings for decks are also available in either aluminum or cloth, depending on the durability needed and price range preferred. Awnings placed over the outdoor recreational areas of a deck or awning increases the amount of time spent in the area since the covering creates a cool, protected area out of direct sunlight.

Awnings for decks are available as stationary or retractable. Installed stationary awnings are one unit that does not move. Once the awning is in place, it stays in that shape and size. While this type of awning is convenient over a deck or patio, some view it as a poor choice for home resale. Retractable awnings for decks and patios are also installed directly only to the home, however the main difference is the awning is able to move and retracted into the housing unit attached to the side of the home. The main benefit of this type of awning is that you are able to control when the awning is open and the amount of shade needed. The ability to retract the awning also decreases the risk of damage since the awning has the ability to retract during high winds, heavy rains and other dangerous weather conditions.

Evaluating awning types and styles presents the decision of whether an aluminum style of awning or cloth version is the best option. Aluminum awnings for decks and patios have increase durability against rain and wind. These awnings do not tear, which means less damage maintenance is required. The aluminum style are available in both the retractable and stationary styles, however they are more expensive and most often found covering small areas due to the cost. The cloth style of awnings creates a cool, shaded area at a lower cost than the aluminum variety making them more practical for covering large areas. Cloth awnings for decks require more maintenance as they easily damage and tear in high winds or during hazardous weather conditions such as hail. Many recommend purchasing cloth awnings as retractable to limit damage as they can be closed when the conditions are present.

Good read. I know that since installing our awnings on our decks, we've spent a ton more times outside enjoying those areas. Probably saved a ton on our electric bills because we aren't indoors running the air con or boob tube!
