Entrepreneur 101 is for those wanting to begin their own social entrepreneurial business. Teaching the principles for entrepreneurs to package, promote and position their knowledge.

I liken the steps to Entrepreneurship as a "Home Run Trot" one needs to take to begin your journey as an Entrepreneur. The Home Run Trot consists of the four bases one has to touch. Home Plate = "Know Thyself". First Base = "Discover your Purpose". Second Base = "Acquire Expertise". Third Base = "Product Creation". In this article we will dig deeper into "Home Plate" and what I mean by "Knowing Thyself".

This saying, "Know Thyself" comes from the ancient Greek Oracle of Apollo at Delphi where Kings, rulers and others would come to receive counsel. Legend has it that when a great man from Sparta asked, "what is best for man?" - or, what was the most important thing one could know or study to become happy and successful? "Know Thyself" was the reply.

Why is this important?

  1. It empowers us as individuals to know that there is only one "me" and that we have been specifically and uniquely created for a purpose bigger than ourselves to serve others somehow.

  2. Too many waste their lives in pretending to be something - or somebody; they're not, taking their life direction from all the wrong people and places. We can never realize our full potential living out someone else's "script".

  3. Living to our full potential is a matter of discovery first, then inventing our life's purpose accurately around our true nature.

  4. The healthy - happy person is aware of their emotions and how their past has affected them for the positive and negative, which is critical for personal and professional development.

  5. Knowing myself gives guidance for all my decisions to be in alignment with my principles and moral values.

Ok - now that we covered the "why" - next we need to know the "how". This is the value of being mentored or coached. To learn from the experts who have mastered the Steps to Success.

Like any great player, we all need that person who can speak into our lives. That "coach" who has taken an interest in our personal development and is keeping a watchful eye on us to point out the areas we are doing well in and the areas where we need to grow - and - the areas we are beginning to slip in and need to get back on track with.

Here are three things I suggest for you to focus on initially:

  1. Discovering your true Self-Image by thinking about your thinking about yourself. This discipline will help you pay more attention to your inner and outer (public) "self-talk". For example, how do you receive compliments? Comment: "Oh, how pretty you look in that dress!" - Reply (self talk): "Yeah, thank you, if only I wasn't so fat".

  2. Discovering your true passions and natural talents. Many never take the time to discover what they are really good at. What they really care about. What really peaks their emotions and fires them up. We just take it for granted and don't think about it beyond the moment. This is often reflected in the work we choose, which does not match our passion because we don't relate our passion to MONEY! We just think of it as a hobby or something to do for fun, rather than something to build a career around.

  3. Discovering freedom to live in your potential. The greatest hindrance to this is the issue of forgiving. This is a three part process that we must master if we are ever to realize and make our life experience match our potential, rather than having our potential as something greater than our daily experience that we never learn to live in. First, we must learn to be proactive forgiving those who have hurt us. Next we must practice learning to ask for forgiveness from those we have hurt. And third, we must practice learning how to forgive ourselves for our past regrets.

With these foundational principles covered, we can move on to the next bases in our "Home Run Trot" as a successful Entrepreneur.
