People love shoes. Of all the things people wear shoes have the most history, art and symbolism attached. Some people collect huge numbers of things to wear on their feet. Making other people envious is probably not the original reason footwear were invented. But the right sandals, pumps or cross trainers do serve that purpose admirably. The glass must have been some very special hi tech glass. Even the youngest story hearers and movie watchers wonder why the glass shoes didn't break. They were probably pretty but not practical and probably not very comfortable.

In folk tales the right footwear can not only improve ones chances in love but also enhance ones career. Puss in Boots, for instance is the story about an impoverished young man who eventually married a princess and became heir to the throne. His good fortune came as the result of his having given a pair of fine boots to his cat.

The boots the cat wore did not seem to have any magical powers. They didn't, for example, give the cat the power of speech since he already knew how to talk when he asked for the boots. Quite possibly the main contribution of the boots was to look impressive and give the cat the respect he deserved from the people he interacted with.

However some of the cat's activities involved running at very high speeds. At one point in the story he outruns the King's coach. He runs so fast he finds time to talk to peasant along the way and persuades them to support his plan. He also manages to kill an ogre and take possession of his castle before the king arrives.

That sort of running requires the right kind of footwear. Obviously the young prince-to-be did himself a great favor by investing in the best available boots for his cat. Though they were not described as such the cat's boots may have been a version of the famous Seven League Boots.

Seven league Boots, according to the stories, allow the wearer to walk seven leagues in one step. A league is equal to three miles so somebody who can walk 21 miles (or just under 35 km) in a single step is moving pretty fast.
