In laymen’s terms: A backlink is a link from one website to your website. These links are vital to the lifeblood of online marketing and, if you want to be successful you will procure for your website backlinks… and a lot of them. First of all, why is it important to have backlinks? There are a few key things that backlinks will do for you and your business. Most obviously, your website will receive traffic from these links. Anytime another website connects to my website there is a possibility that someone will click on that backlink and be directed to my site.

Let’s say that I have posted an article on an article directory and, in the article, I included a link (or a backlink) to my signature directing people to this site for more information. Perhaps that gets my site 5 views per month because, unlike advertising, these backlinks don’t disappear – they are there forever. Now 5 views doesn’t seem like a lot, but what if I submitted that same article to 20 sites? 100 views per month… Now what if I wrote one article every day and posted each article to 20 sites, we’re now up to 3,000 views per month. Not bad considering $20 is a good price for 300 views in a paid advertisement. The more articles we submit and post, the more traffic. But it doesn’t even end there! Let’s suppose (with the same conversion rate) we post a link to this article also on our social networking sites. I have twelve, so we will go with that number; now how many views per month are we up to? 36,000 views per month. And we did it all for free; this is the incredible power of the backlink.

But that’s not the half of it. Backlinks are also essential for your search engine rankings. When search engines use their secret algorithms to determine the validity, authority and relevance of a particular website, they use backlinks as a determining factor. The more backlinks your website has to other valid websites relevant to your content, the better you will rank with the search engines. To get an idea of how essential it is to rank well with Google think about this: I know one network marketer who has signed up nearly 50 people from ONE single article he wrote on his website that was ranked in the top five websites for a particular keyword search. How would you like to sign up 50 people to your business by simply writing an article?

Lastly, backlinks provide you with validity not only in the eyes of the search engines, but in the eyes of the public. The more places you have information and resources posted, the more of an expert you are going to appear to be. Remember, just because we are marketing online does not mean that the "relationship" part of this business goes out the window. We still need to build those relationships and, in order to do that, we need to offer something valuable to others so that they will want to connect with us. If we are constantly pitching to people and never offering anything of value or interest, we will come up against a brick wall. In order to get people interested in you, you have to be interested in people. It’s obvious those who are out there for nothing else than monetary gain, and those who are willing to be a resource to the greater good of the community.

That’s just my little off-topic rant, let’s get back to the links. How do we obtain more of these precious links? The magic word here is consistency. As we saw above how greatly our efforts were multiplied by submitting one piece of content to various sites, and also how greatly our views increased when we did this on a regular basis. Multiply your efforts by submitting all of your posts to several article directories and social networking sites – and be consistent. Writing three articles and then quitting is not going to catapult your business anywhere but to the dark, forgotten corners of the internet.
