Cataract Eye Surgery

Cataracts- what are they?

Cataracts are a clouding of the natural lens inside the eye. Cataracts are a gradual thickening of the lens that caused the lens to become very clouded. Then the light going into your eye cannot properly reach the back of the eye, the retina, for transmission to the brain. Your vision is blurry. When left untreated, cataracts may eventually cause blindness.

Cataracts- How do you treat them?

You can’t be given oral medicine or eye drops to get rid of cataracts. You cannot remove a cataract, but you can replace the lens in the eye. The natural lens is then replaced with a new, plastic, artificial lens. This artificial lens is called an intraocular lens or IOL. There are different types of lens available, ones that may even make your vision better than you have ever had.

Cataract Causes

There are many factors and possibilities to the sources of cataracts. Cataracts could be caused by excessive exposure to ultraviolet light, trauma to the eye, illness, or particular medicines. There are certain diseases, such as diabetes and hypothyroidism that have been shown to cause cataracts.

Insurance coverage for cataract surgery

Cataract surgery is covered by Medicare and also private insurance, along with any co-pays or deductibles you have with a medical procedure. You will need to pay an additional cost for premium lens, if you choose one of the specialized lenses.

Specialized Cataract Lens Choices

With cataract surgery, eye surgeons can make your vision better than it was before you developed cataracts, and possibly better than it has ever been with the use of premium or specialized cataract lens. These lenses include "Toric" lens for distance vision and "multi-focal" lens for both distance and near vision. You may not even need glasses after choosing one of these premium lenses, or you may need glasses for reading and up-close print.
