Online Writing Courses – Getting an Education

In the last article in our series, we talked about the idea of needing the right education to succeed as a freelance writer.

The fact is that you don’t need a college degree to be successful at freelance writing, though it can’t hurt either.

Online writing courses are a convenient way to get the education you need. No travel expenses, no outrageous fees or residency issues, no time barriers for learning.

One of the most appealing aspects of taking online writing courses is the fact that you can pick and choose the exact topics that you need to learn and leave the rest alone. Maybe you are a proficient writer, but you don’t understand the process for submitting your work to editors. There’s a course for that.

Maybe you have already had some success as a writer, having articles published in magazines, but now you’d like to learn how to write a novel, find a suitable publishing house, and submit your work to them. There’s a course for that too.

Whatever you need to learn, chances are you can find an online writing course that fits the bill.

One word of caution though. Be sure that the author of the course is qualified to teach. Too many times, I’ve seen courses designed by people who have never had anything published. They are not active in the industry, so their recommendations are outdated and stale.

Find a course that is designed or taught by an active writer, one who has publishing credits under their belt. You’ll also find that authors who take the time to teach are very approachable and ready to help you really grasp the course content.

One author that I know takes her teaching seriously is Janice Thompson. Janice has over 60 published books to her credit, hundreds of articles, and makes a full time living from her writing. She also has a teacher’s heart and enjoys helping others succeed in the writing industry. You can check out her online writing courses by clicking the link in the resource box at the bottom of this article.

Going online can be a wonderful way to get a writing education. So, get started today and maybe we’ll see you on the best sellers list.
