There is a concerning number of women who for many and varied reasons, continue to wear regular lingerie when in fact they should make use of the wonderful range of breast feeding bras currently available on the market today.
Why not continue to wear your regular bra? If you have been pregnant or experienced breast feeding in the past, you will have been through the discomfort brought on by continuing to wear regular lingerie which becomes ill-fitting around the end of your first trimester. Many women are not even aware that there are such things as breast feeding bras or that they are designed as mucha for breast feeding as they are for wearing during pregnancy.
There are bras to cover every occasion these days – strapless, crossover, backless, plunging, minimising, halterneck, full cup, ¾, balconette – the list is endless. I was disheartened to be confronted by boring, beige breast feeding bras during my first pregnancy, so disheartened in fact, it lead me to start up my own maternity lingerie company. So, add to that list, gorgeous, feminine, fashionable breast feeding bras!
As mentioned above, around the end of your first trimester, your body begins to change. A noticeable increase in the size of your diaphragm may result and/or an increase in bust size. There is no need to be constantly adjusting and freeing your bra from beneath your bust. The answer to this discomfort is to visit your local lingerie boutique and get professionally fitted for your breast feeding bra. You will probably experience another increase in size at around seven months into your pregnancy. This will mean you need to be fitted again but both of these nursing bras should be able to be used after the birth of your baby, when your milk flow settles and you return to something nearer your pre-pregnancy size.
Breast feeding bras are specifically designed to accommodate the physical changes pregnant and breast feeding women experience. They have smooth or hidden seams for ultimate comfort of sensitive skin. They have no underwire, which can put pressure on milk ducts and tissue, leading to nasty infections. They should be lined with soft, 100% cotton, use only soft, stretchy laces and have wider than normal cotton lined shoulder straps to offer both support and comfort. Technologically advanced fabrics provide the necessary support for breasts which can fluctuate markedly in size and good pregnancy and nursing bras will have six rows of hooks and eyes, in three layers for the ultimate in creating the perfect silhouette. Breast feeding bras do come in a variety of fabrics, shapes and styles and they do have matching underwear and nightwear – there is no need to suffer through boring and beige! Function and practicality are incorporated in what I believe to be an absolute necessity to your maternity wardrobe.
