Boca Raton Dentist Asks: IS IT FOR YOU?

This section is about the brief history of teeth bleaching

procedures provided by a Boca Raton dentist and we will discuss

who could benefit from this technique. Also, we will discuss some

of the alternative methods that are available such as porcelain

veneers or things that you can do at home to make your smile

brighter.

If you are looking to have whiter, brighter teeth, than this is your

chance, for there has never been so many options available to

people as the ones that are around now. Some of these options are

bleaching systems and cosmetic procedures that can give you a

whiter brighter smile.

For over a hundred years teeth whitening procedures have been

done. Even as far back as 1877, they used oxalic acid to whiten

teeth. Hydrogen peroxide was also a whitening procedure that was

being used in 1884 and 1918, which with the use of high-intensity

lights was used to hasten the bleaching process this was reported

by the ADA.

A study by the Council on Dental Therapeutics on teeth whiteners

(specifically peroxide) found that there was no significant adverse

health effects associated with people using dentist-prescribed

home whiteners. Some minor side effects might be mild tooth

sensitivity to temperature changes and some mucosal irritation.

And most side effects from a teeth whitening procedure disappear

in about one to seven days.

IS TEETH WHITENING FOR YOU?

Most people will have a slight discoloration on their teeth, and this

comes from aging, a natural build-up of some organic pigments, a

trauma to the teeth, from drinking coffee, tea, wine, smoking, and

can come from long use of medications during a young age when

the teeth are developing. There is such a huge variety of

procedures available that you can take advantage of if you are

looking to brighten your smile. Having a whiter brighter smile

gives you extra confidence and boots your self-esteem.

WHO SHOULD CAREFULLY REVIEW WHETHER BLEACHING IS A GOOD OPTION?

If you have sensitive teeth than you should consider using a milder

solution for bleaching, because the techniques used in the office

may cause you to have more sensitivity. Also if you have very thin

teeth, using bleaching techniques, although it will lighten your

teeth, it can show more of a grey translucency.

Now if you have multiple crowns or you have white fillings on your

front teeth, because of this the restorations will not bleach the

available materials, and you may have to consider replacing your

crowns, with veneers or changing the white composite fillings in

your front teeth.

HOW SOON WILL I SEE RESULTS AND WHAT KIND OF RESULTS CAN I EXPECT FROM THE TEETH WHITENING PROCEDURES?

No two people are alike, and everyone will respond differently as

to the amount of time it will take to see results. That is why it is

very important that you discuss with your Boca Raton dentist in

advance as to what the cause of your discoloration is from, before

you proceed. Most people using the at home whitening technique

will see results in four to seven days. If you opt for the in-office

procedure, you will see results within an hour. However if you have

intrinsic staining (which is from fluorosis, tetracycline or tooth

trauma) the results will take longer and may need to have more

than one session, or you can discuss other options for the really

intense stains. These intense stains are usually the streaks or the

purplish discolorations that are harder to lighten. If you have

intense streaks you will find that they will fade somewhat, but they

are almost impossible to remove the streaks totally, especially if

you are using a home bleaching process at home.

HOW MUCH SHOULD I EXPECT TO PAY FOR THE PROCESS?

Costs will vary depending on what type of procedure you select to

get the best results for you. Typically you will see prices that range from $325 to $850 depending on what procedure is best suited for you.
