Joint pain can cause every day activities to be too painful to endure. Blocking out the pain through medication can sometimes fog the brain, still causing every day activities difficult to endure. A great way to get back to enjoying those every day activities without the pain, or the fogged brain, is to relive the pain through exercise. The trick is knowing how much exercise to do, since too little will be ineffective and too much can cause serious injury. With the right exercises, joint pain can lesson more and more over time.
The first thing to remember is to not do more than the body can handle. Starting slow and easing into an exercise routine is the best way to increase flexibility and loosen stiffness. The benefits of exercising for joint pain can be to strengthen the muscles around the joints, increase and maintain bone strength, and control a healthy weight. It will also help to offer more energy and endurance to get through the day.
A range of motion exercise can help relive stiffness in the joints and make the movement in each joint easier. In order to do these, one must move their joints through their full range of motion. This can be moving the arms up over the head, and rolling the shoulders around. Working through each of the stiff joints, one can slowly work them through their full range of motion once a day, or once every other day.
Another great exercise that can help is strengthening exercises. These include exercises that will build up the strength in the muscles around the painful joints in order to help protect the joints. To do these, always remember not to do more than what is comfortable. Try getting some free weights and ankle weights and doing some light aerobic exercises. These will not only strengthen the muscles, but allow for one to add in range of motion exercises as well.
In order to help with over all comfort, one can add in endurance exercises to the routine. Endurance exercises add stamina and help to maintain a healthy weight. Some simple exercises to build up endurance can include low impact activities such as walking, swimming, or even riding a bike. These should all be done three times a week, thirty minutes a day. However, starting slowly with ten minutes, three times a week would be a great way to ease the body into a regular routine.
Each of these is great to help anyone with joint pain. They allow for someone to have a better quality of life through less pain and easier days. As with any exercise routine, it is always best to discuss any new exercise plan with a health care professional to ensure the best outcome. Once cleared, a person can begin to build up their endurance, strengthen their muscles, and begin to get through every day activities without the stiffness and pain once complicating life.
