From embedded computers to chocolate making, all industries require copywriters to write, market and sell their goods. As the industry becomes inundated with generic writers creating generic copy, it’s more important than ever to hire a dedicated copywriter to promote your goods.

Copywriters that can write articles for £15 an hour/article are becoming more advertised on the web. It’s now generally expected to see pay per click (PPC) ads which say "2000 writers ready to write copy for only £15/h." Go on eLance, oDesk or any other freelancing B2B web site and virtually all copywriters will be bidding on work for extremely cheap prices.

But surely, cheap is a good thing? The truth is, you get what you pay for. A lot of these copywriters, quite often from India, are not native English speakers. It shows in their writing; A lot of the time it’s nearly impossible to read! However it's possible to find native English copywriters offering the same prices. Whilst they have the benefit of speaking and writing English, grammar and spelling is often overlooked and the finished product is doesn't quite read as well as it could.

In reality, it’s not possible to make a living in Britain writing copy for that cheap. They’ll either increase their prices, be forced out of the market or in some circumstances take the quick route and plagiarise. There are many ways to check if an article has been plagiarise online and I would recommend using them if you hire such writers.

A good copywriter goes beyond good spelling and grammar; they are experienced in a particular field. If I have a complex industrial computer system instructional documents written, I'd look for a specialist copywriter with engineering experience similar to the engineers who designed and built the device. most writers can't understand that detail of expertise for £10 an hour.

Even marketing copy greatly benefits from a writer with their background in a similar field. An electronics engineer will enjoy writing about uninterruptable power supplies (UPS), which will reflect in the copy. An unqualified copywriter won’t fully appreciate or understand the value of UPS and therefore won’t be able to write a solid press release they deserve.

If you're after many rolls of copy to expand your web site for SEO purposes and aren't bothered about the quality, then go ahead and hire cheap copywriters. Although, a lot of cheaper copywriting freelancers aren't trained or experienced in SEO or keyword optimisation. For anything else, I can’t stress enough the benefit of a dedicated professional copywriting business. Professional copy makes the difference between a sale and a loss; a lawsuit and company security.

Engineering writers are few and far between, but for technical copy, or marketing copy for industrial technology I'd recommend specialists Charig Associates. They can be found at charigassociates.com and have just started a new music technology division.
