Most women have some area of the body that they are not perfectly happy with. For many, it is the breasts. As the aging process progresses, the breasts often start to sag or fall. This can make tops and dresses hang incorrectly. It can make swimsuits look wrong. A wonder bra can only do so many wonders, and then at some point it has to come off. Unhappiness with the appearance of the breasts can have an adverse effect on self-confidence and sex life. Almost 90,000 women in the United States invested in a breast lift in 2010 according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Officially termed mastoplexy, this surgical procedure makes the breasts appear more youthful and perky.

Mastoplexy removes extra skin and tightens the tissue surrounding the breasts to raise and reshape them. This will give the appearance of firmer, higher breasts, with a rounder appearance. Aging breasts tend to elongate and droop in a pendulum fashion, while breast lift reverses the years to give younger looking breasts. This procedure should be entered into with eyes open. Though there are rewards, there are also risks possible. This is a major plastic surgery that involves scars, recovery, and costs that are almost never covered by insurance.

A breast lift procedure will be most effective if the patient is already in good shape and maintains a consistent healthy weight and is a non-smoker. It is also wise to realistic expectations of the improvement possible. Ask your plastic surgeon if you can view before and after pictures of previous patients who have had the same procedure you are considering. Depending on the specific incision types and placements, scarring will vary. You should discuss all the aspects of the surgery with your physician and ask all questions up front. A good plastic surgeon will allow for plenty of consulting time prior to the surgery to educate you about the mastoplexy procedure, including its risks and rewards.

When you are preparing to have a breast lift, be sure to express emotional concerns with your surgeon as well. Giving yourself a new look can cause anxiety as well as excitement. Your doctor may be able to help allay your fears and answer concerns. Make sure you understand the recovery process and all instructions thoroughly. Following them will affect the outcome of the surgery. Mastoplexy can add a youthful appearance to your silhouette or be a part of a larger makeover scheme of plastic surgery.

Discuss your breast lift options with a certified plastic surgeon.
