There are many different varieties of crown molding available in different styles and materials which are inspired by age old Architectural periods. Crown moldings can be used in both traditional and contemporary applications. The most common material used for crown molding is wood, though there are other varieties of material available in the market, but higher end classical crown are usually either plaster or polyurethane.
Plaster molding is heavy, and requires skilled and expensive installation. Polyurethane moldings are becoming increasingly popular recently over plaster or wood moldings because of its high density material which is best for Crown molding. when using wood molding, several pieces of wood is required to get the same rich profile as in a one piece polyurethane.
Polyurethane crown molding has none of the disadvantages of wood like cracking or splitting, though it can easily be nailed, cut, painted and glued just like wood molding. Polyurethane molding can also be used for exterior applications, as it is rarely affected by moisture, insects or temperature change. Polyurethane crown moldings can easily be molded into many different styles and sizes, which are available in various popular profiles such as Egg & Dart, Acanthus leaf, Floral vine, French scroll, Dentil and many more.
