Resume is the way of expressing yourself to the employer. When you are applying for any position, the employer has zero knowledge about your possessed skills and your work related traits. Your resume can help you to introduce yourself to the employer before facing the personal interview. Your resume should stand out from hundreds of other resumes and grab the sight of the employer. For this, it is significant to follow the resume writing tips. Many people think that it is not necessary to focus on writing the resume and including only necessary details will do for them. This is completely untrue. Every section in resume is equally important and similar attention should be given on writing each and every section. Here we discuss the tips for including references on resume.

What are the References?

References are the names of the people either from your previous employments; possibly your colleagues, or your seniors. Prospective employers need the names of the references to know your efficiency, working ability and your strengths. Verifying the details from your previous employers, your prospective employer can easily decide on your job suitability.

Whom can you use as References?

You cannot include the name of any of your previous colleague as the reference. The person you are giving as a reference should either be your past colleague or your past employer. Either of the references should not be your close friend or relative. You can give the names of your immediate seniors or the other people from your past work who knows you.

Important of Including References on Resume

How to Write Reference for Resume

Most people do not include references on their resume thinking that employer will not need to refer your previous employer to know your working abilities. But it is always good to include names of the references in the resume. You can include at least two references and at most three names. Make sure to include the contact details mentioning name, designation, e-mail ID and phone number of the person.

When you are not including the names in the resume, you must carry the sheet describing the names and necessary details of the references at the time of personal interview and present it to the interviewer when demanded.

Use separate page for writing references. Make use of the bulleted points for listing the details so that the resume looks well organized and attractive.

You can also divide the list of references into professional references and personal references. This will help the employer to know your professional behavior and personal behavior.

You can also use the columned list to present your reference. The professional references can include the names of your colleagues, or your bosses while your personal references may include your close friends or relatives.

Employer will generally question about your work ethics and your attitude at work place. Your friends and relatives can comment about your personal character. This will give a balanced view of your character to your potential employer.

Unlike other resume sections, references in your resume are equally important. According to the recent trend, you can make a separate sheet describing the names of the references and carry this sheet at the time of personal interview instead of including them on your resume itself.
