New York City: Bed Bug Central

New Study Declares NYC Bed Bug Capital of America

According to a recent Terminix study, New York City has been crowned the bed bug capital of America, leading the way with infestations plaguing everywhere from apartment complexes, to homes, to businesses, and even to office buildings.

Kitty Bean Yancey of USA Today explored the familiar territory of bed bugs as yet another means to promote education on the matter, as bed bug season really heats up with the arrival of summer. Since there is a distinct stigma associated with the pests—most people believe bed bugs are a result of dirt or uncleanliness--so many cases of infestation can often go untreated and then they become much worse.

While there is no way to be sure exactly how one came into contact with bed bugs—you can get them just about anywhere these days—you should be aware that traveling is one easy way to pick them up. So here are some quick tips to remember when traveling, to avoid getting bed bugs: search your bed and/or hotel room for the bugs or signs of their presence (blood, fecal matter, etc.) when you arrive. Even before you check in, check the bedbugregistry.com to see if they have had any bed bug problems.

While on vacation, keeping your luggage as far away from the bed as possible and out of dresser drawers is prudent. Leaving your luggage in the bathroom is also a safe alternative to storing your belongings in a closet or on a vacant bed. Finally, the most important thing is to immediately wash and dry your luggage contents upon returning home from vacation. Be sure to vacuum your luggage and place all other contents in rubber bags when transporting clothes to your washing machine as an extra precaution.
