Whether you are just out of an EM residency or preparing to take your re-cert, finding an emergency medicine job that fits can be difficult. Maybe you found a job in a location where you want to live but, it doesn't pay as well as other jobs. It can be tough to find the perfect job and they all have pros and cons.
Most emergency physicians look at location although, others look for the highest paying.
Picking a state is a good way to narrow it down right off the bat. Most emergency medicine job sites offer a state alert so that when new jobs are listed in a certain state you are notified. As far as finding a job based on pay goes very few job postings actually publish the hourly rate or salary but, a simple email or call can usually get you a ball park figure.
Looking at all the online resources can be confusing and annoying at times when you have to login just to look at a job description and then the emails that follow. I know personally and a lot of friends and co-workers love getting that issue of Annals and flipping thru the back pages looking at job openings. Even if you aren't looking for a job actively it's still fun to browse.
Do you want to work with a recruiter and have them do the search for you? For some people this is a preferred option and takes most of the leg work off their plate. For those who would rather deal straight with the employer finding these job listings can be a bit of a treasure hunt. A few things to look for are exact addresses for the location of the job and an email with name of the hospital. Most recruiter listings give a vague location or their firms location. Sometimes these listings can be frustrating especially when you call and they eventually let you know the job isn't actually in Steamboat Springs, Colorado but, Delta, Colorado -- quite a difference in location and environment. So, if it looks to good to be true, well it probably is.
There are many EM job sites although, not many that specialize in only emergency medicine. Narrowing down where you search for jobs can help filter out a lot of non emergency medicine jobs.
The good news is you will find an EM job and will be paid well regardless. The nice thing about being an emergency medicine specialist is that there doesn't seem to be any lack of job openings.
