LASIK is a surgical procedure performed by ophthalmologists to correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. LASIK is an acronym for Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis.
Performed by Ophthalmologists using a laser, LASIK eye surgery has a high rate of success in treating vision problems, and is considered an excellent alternative to corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses for many patients.
Laser eye surgery is similar to other forms of eye surgery, including Photorefractive Keratectomy or PRK, but provides benefits over PRK, such as faster patient recovery. After LASIK eye surgery, many patients no longer need eyeglasses or contact lenses, and enjoy restored or improved vision.
There are several steps that will be completed before LASIK surgery is performed. First is a baseline examination by an eye doctor to confirm that LASIK is a suitable option. The doctor will discuss with the patient the risks of LASIK surgery, its benefits, and any available alternatives. Leading up to surgery, patients who wear contact lenses are instructed to discontinue their use for up to four weeks prior, and wear eyeglasses instead. This allows the cornea to return to its regular curvature in case the contact lens
The procedure takes less than 20 minutes, and will be performed in the ophthalmologist's office. The eyes and the surface immediately around them are numbed with an eye drop, and the eyelids are comfortably kept open. The laser system includes a microscope and computer monitor. Eyesight during the procedure is dimmed or blurred, but quickly recovers after completion. There may be mild discomfort or foreign body sensation in the eyes after the procedure, but this, too, quickly stops.
After LASIK surgery, substantial recovery of vision occurs during the first 48 hours but does not reach maximum recovery until 6-8 weeks and even longer is severe cases. Patients use an antibiotic and steroid eye drop for the first 5 days and often use artificial tears to lubricate the eyes for several weeks after the procedure during which tear production returns.
