Time to kiss your insomnia goodbye. It's important to get a good night's sleep if you want to be efficient with the things you do during the day. We spend one-third of our lives in the bedroom. For those who enjoy sleeping, it will be more. However it's not the quantity of the sleep that counts, it's the quality. You can use the Feng-Shui principles to get that quality sleep.

Feng Shui(meaning wind water) is a 3,000-year-old Chinese philosophy. We are affected by our surroundings, such as colors, shapes and energy. With the help of Feng Shui we can have a better understanding of how our surroundings affect us.

Feng Shui is very complex and you can go really deep if you want to. But we will use Feng Shui in a simple, practical way to help you to furniture your bedroom to get a better sleep. Follow these 11 simple steps to ensure that you will get a good night’s sleep.

  1. Clutter:

Clear your bedroom from clutter. Avoid having your things all over the room. The mess affects how you feel. Your bedroom is not a storage room. You feel it's easier to breathe if you have more space.

The bedroom should only be used for sleep and sex.

Make your bed every day. A bed that is unmade reflects the stress in your life. The bed should be raised off the floor with enough space for air to circulate underneath. Don't store anything under the bed, it will block the energy flow.

  1. Colors:

The most restful colors for the bedroom walls are the so-called "skin colors", such as cream, beige, caramel and brown. Soft tones like blue and pink are also calming.

Stay away from colors that are stimulating or bright, like green, red and pure white.

  1. Door:

The bed should not be placed in front of the bedroom door or in line with it. For safety, our prehistorical ancestors did not sleep next to the cave entrance. Our instincts are the same today.

The best position for the bed is diagonally opposite the door. When you are in bed you should be able to see the door without being in front of it. This gives you a deep sense of inner security, which means you can relax.

If you really need to have the bed in line with the door, a wind chime should be placed between the bed and the door.

  1. Bedroom art:

If you want to have art in your bedroom, make sure it's something inspiring.

Choose images that you want to see happening in your life. Don't put up sad, lonely or singular images unless that is what you want in your life. Aggressive images does not belong in the bedroom.

Don't have pictures in your room, illustrating the water. Images of water can cause insomnia. It can also bring bad luck. For the same reason do not place fish tanks and fountains in your bedroom.

  1. Light:

Soft lighting is ideal. Avoid having ceiling lamps right directly over your bed. Candles with their soft light are suitable for the bedroom.

  1. Mirror:

Mirrors are not so suitable for the bedroom. If you must have one, make sure you can't see yourself when lying on the bed, which means no mirror facing the bed. Mirrors are yang and reflects energy. You don't want to much of this energy in the bedroom since it can disrupt your sleep. Besides, the image in the mirror may not be the best when you first wake up.

Have the mirror far away from the bed. You can also hang the mirror inside the closet door, which can be closed at night.

If you must have a mirror facing the bed, cover it up at night with a cloth.

  1. Plants:

Due to their yang nature, plants should be avoided in the bedroom. If it's a large room, a small plant far away from the bed is acceptable.

  1. Poison arrows:

Make sure there are no objects with sharp edges (like the corner of a table) facing the bed. You don't want this focused negative energy towards you when sleeping. Cover up these sharp edges with a cloth.

A ceiling fan is nice way to circulate the energy in the room but avoid having it above the bed. Like the sharp edges this concentrated energy will disrupt your sleep.

Don't place the bed under a ceiling beam. The beam has a tremendous pressure downwards and will affect your sleep. If moving the bed is not an option, you can paint the beam with the same color as the ceiling. You can also hang a bambo flute on the beam to achieve the same effect.

If you must sleep in a bedroom with a slanted ceiling, position your bed against the wall on the higher end.

  1. Electronic items:

Televisions and computers don't belong in the bedroom. If you must have it, cover it up at night with a piece of fabric. But keep them away from the bed. Do not have the phone next to the bed.

Electronic equipment generates electro-magnetic waves that can affect your sleep. All electronic items should be placed far away from the bed. That includes electrical clocks.

  1. Wall:

The head of the bed should be placed against a wall. This way you have a protective wall behind you.

  1. Window:

Avoid placing your bed next to the window. The energy in the room flows between the door and the window. You would be in the line of this energy flow.

If you can't move the bed, at least make sure the head of the bed is not next to the window. And close the curtains at night.

Using Feng Shui principles to furniture your bedroom doesn't have to be more complicated than this. Use this knowledge to get more harmony in your bedroom and you will sleep better at night. Start today.
