One mans rubbish is another mans treasure and so it is with movies. There are some classic scifi movies that I can't bear to sit through and other commonly thought of duds that I can't get enough of.
Revenge of the Fallen This is a film that was mauled by the critics but I love it. I can see that it has some problems but there's a lot of fun to be had in it. It starts with an Autobot attack on the Decepticons. If that last sentence doesn't make you excited then it's not the film for you. Did I mention that within the first ten minutes Optimus Prime is dropped out of a plane. You've also got some fabulous scenes with Megatron and Starscream, an unbelievable fight in a forest and some great comedy. If this movie came out before the first Transformers movie with no expectations on it I think it wouldn't have had as much of a negative reaction. The bar was set quite high with the first movie. Not that the film didn't do well at the box office. It was huge. The problems in it for me are not enough attention being paid to the Autobots Sideswipe, Ironhide and Ratchet. Great characters that we hardly see. Devastator was also a bit disappointing although I thought his wrecking balls were hilarious. The thing with Revenge though is that it is packed with so many fantastical scenes that it just cant disappoint me.
Alien 3 After the James Cameron extravaganza that was Aliens the public was expecting Alien 3 to deliver another installment of alien terror and fun. That's not what we got though. We got a movie where the remaining survivors of the last movie were instantly killed except for Ripley. The happy-ish ending of Aliens was rubbed out straight away and any good feeling went with it. What that did do was provide the starting point for an incredibly bleak but satisfying movie where Ripley has to come to terms with the fact that she will not be able to escape the Alien ruining her life and eventually killing her. The film is set on a prison planet full of men. Each of the prisoners has their head shaved due to infections. When do you ever see a successful franchise killing off the characters we care about and replacing them with bald prisoners? Never. That's what I like about Alien 3. It's not predictable and has a strong emotional core as Ripley tries to help the prisoners survive even though she has no chance of getting out herself.
Return of the Jedi This one's not really thought of as a dud but rather as the weakest of the classic Star Wars trilogy. The weakest in the greatest trilogy ever is still pretty fabulous. Most of the gripes about Jedi surrounds the Ewoks. Why I don't know. I think the Ewoks are an excellent addition to the Saga. In fact I can't think of anything wrong with Jedi other than much less millenium falcon than the other films.
