For any athlete to have success, he or she must have the proper equipment, no matter the sport. In golf, swinging a particular club could increase distance and accuracy. Utilizing a certain type of tennis racquet can increase velocity. Sufficient and quality padding is critical in order to play well in contact sports such as ice hockey and football. Having a great stick and skates certainly can give a hockey player an advantage.

Pro cycling is no exception to possessing the right equipment. The following goes into detail regarding the most critical pieces of equipment for a pro cyclist.

Pro Cycling Equipment

The central piece of equipment for a pro cyclist is a top of the line bike. This type of bike is ultra expensive, as it's constructed with strong, lightweight materials to withstand the rigors of racing while maximizing speed. An advanced gear shift system is typically included that gives cyclists the ability to shift very quickly and easily to better navigate the various terrain effectively. It allows for easier pedaling in mountainous or hilly regions. While on level ground, it allows for more pedal resistance.

The wheels play an important role in performance as well. The most competitive cyclists will have two sets of wheels: one will typically be aluminum wheels for the races, while the other is a lesser expensive kind used for training purposes. To limit wind resistance and enhance speed, pro cycling bike wheels have fewer spokes when compared to conventional bicycles. Moreover, spokes are completely absent on some of the wheels in which lighter weight connections are used instead.

Apparel Accessories

While the bike reigns supreme as far as importance, accessories play a key role in performance as well. One is an aerodynamic helmet to reduce wind resistance and provide optimal protection in the event of an accident.

Attire does have an effect on performance as well, so pro cyclists wear jerseys that are very lightweight and aerodynamic. To stay cool, the jerseys are very breathable as well. Special padding is placed inside their biking shorts for protection and comfort during long races.
