For a long time the only people who could comfortably and safely receive laser hair removal treatment were light skinned people with dark hair. This was so because dark skinned people had the ability of absorbing the light energy into their skins resulting in skin damage whilst with light skinned people because of the color of their skin the light energy would only be absorbed by the hair follicles.

This resulted in dark skinned people being unable to receive this treatment.

The story is differently today as dark skinned people can now be treated using Neodymium: Yttrium Aluminum Garnet lasers popularly known as Nd:YAG lasers.

Why Does Nd:YAG Laser Work?

It operates much in the same way as the normal laser and pulsed light hair removal procedure. The difference is mainly in the wavelength which is longer than the usual Ruby laser which has a wavelength of 694nm, Alexandrite laser - 755nm, and Diode lasers - 800 - 810nm. The Nd:YAG laser has a wavelength of 1064nm. As a result of this longer wavelength, more precaution can be taken and the light energy would still be able to go through the skin and get to the perifollicular melanin in the hair follicles.

This laser is put to more use than just hair removal. It is also used in situations where pigmented lesions need to be treated or even the removal of tattoos.

Nd:YAG lasers perform as well as other laser in hair removal treatment. The result of hair removal treatment with this laser can be permanent or semi-permanent depending on the skin type and other variables. Cases where new growth is recorded, they are usually finer in texture and lighter in color.

On the issue of how safe the ND:YAG Laser is, effects would differ from person to person just like any other laser treatment. It is known that this treatment is getting safer and safer and advancements in technology makes it easier for new ways to increase its safety to be devised.

It is very important that you make sure you consult with a laser hair removal specialist before commencing on any treatment. There are so many precautions to be taken before, during and after any laser hair removal treatment. You seriously increase the risk of causing more damage on your skin when you allow unqualified people to treat you. Remember that any damage to your skin would result in you spending much more money to fix this damage. Be sure to take good care of your skin.
