The run up to Christmas is always a time when your home is at its most vulnerable so it's a good time to check your security arrangements.

Here are five simple home security tips to bear in mind.

If you've got an intruder alarm, for heaven's sake switch it on. It's been proven that most burglars will move on to an easier target if they see a burglar alarm box on the wall. These visual deterrents can be extremely effective.

Outside lighting will help to put off would-be burglars casing the joint and inside light timer-switches will help it look like the property is occupied. You can even put timer switches on televisions or radios to complete the picture of someone at home.

A recent study showed that we already put hundreds of pounds worth of expensive gadgetry in full view of passersby, so don't add to the temptation by placing gifts under the Christmas tree and then leave the curtains open.

To avoid detection before the big day, some people can be tempted to store larger gifts outside in garages, sheds or cars. Tempting as it may be, never leave presents outside but keep them as safe as you can indoors.

After the presents have been opened, make sure that you fold any empty boxes with the labels innermost and don't put them out for the refuse collectors until the last moment. Refuse collection is always severely disrupted and those boxes could be there for days telling the world and his wife what new gadgets are now ready to be stolen inside.

Since statistics show that most burglaries will take place during weekday daylight hours, it is worth taking those times into consideration when looking at your current security arrangements.

Door and window entry systems should be solid and always used - even if you are in the house. Intruder alarm systems should be tested regularly, preferably annually.

Finally, it is worth remembering that most home insurers will lower premiums on properties with certain home security measures in place so that's worth investigating

Seasons Greetings.
