With Christmas well and truly over and the brand new year in full swing, for many people this is the perfect opportunity to make a fresh start. In amongst the usual diet and exercise ambitions, one of the most popular New Years resolutions is to make a change to their professional life.

More and more people are using January to metaphorically ‘grab the bull by the horns’ and finally take that leap into a new career by starting their own business, after all; out with the old and in with the new!

However, one of the problems that many new entrepreneurs face when starting up a business from home is differentiating between their personal and professional life. As well as the host of distractions that the home can offer to someone who is trying to concentrate, it can also be difficult to switch off and call it a night without those office wall boundaries stopping you from burning the midnight oil.

When it comes to starting your new working life you mean to go on it is important to create a space that reflects your new business, as well as being both practical and separate from your home-life.

Ray Pringle from Brighton fit out and interior design specialists 20sixltd explained, "We have found that having a creative office space in which to work can enhance both concentration levels and productivity."

The great thing about planning your own personal working environment is the opportunity you have to make the area exactly how you want it. From the colour scheme and decorations on the walls reflecting your company perfectly, to choosing the perfect desk to harbour all of your work – this is a chance to get everything exactly how you like it.

But before you rush into your decision, follow our top tips to choosing two of the most important furniture items.

Choosing your chair: Considering that this will be the place that you will be spending the majority of your time each day, the last thing you want is to find yourself sitting uncomfortably or hunched over your computer. At 20sixltd we would always suggest choosing an ergonomic chair to ensure that your back is sufficiently supported and to avoid any aches and pains.

Choosing your desk: With a huge range of desks to choose from, this can often be a difficult decision, but before you make it you should first take note of which equipment that you wish your new desk to house. Many desks come with built in adapter plugs if you find yourself with a lot of electrical gadgets, whilst others have a large amount of storage space if you tend to find yourself with a lot of files.
