Fall in the USA is unlike any other season. It's a time of change and celebration as people bid farewell to the summer but look forward to the annual traditions of Halloween, harvest festivals, fall foliage road trips and more.
Fall Events
Fall is a lively season in the US with many states playing host to festivals and celebrations of some kind, particularly in the south where fall marks the end of the farming season, and final crops are harvested.
Fans of seafood should attend the annual North Carolina Seafood Festival in October in Morehead City. Not only can visitors savour some of the freshest local seafood, but also enjoy top class entertainment at one of the many aptly-named stages – Clam Jam Stage, SasSea Stage, Oyster Rock Stage and more.
The fall months are the best time of the year to enjoy locally grown apples, and to celebrate, Liberty in Kentucky hosts the annual Case County Apple Festival. A small town it may be but Liberty is home to the world's largest apple pie! Every year the festivities attract thousands of tourists who flock to experience the parade, delicious apple-based cuisine, live music and attractions.
No fall trip to or around the US is complete without visiting a Corn Maze. These pop up throughout the country, but some of the best can be enjoyed in California. Wonder through the Cool Patch Pumpkin maze in Dixon, California. If you do find your way out, a visit is also a great opportunity to pick a pumpkin for Halloween, and take part in the scarecrow contest.
Fall Foliage
Some states look particularly beautiful dressed in the rich yellow, red and orange tones of fall foliage. Draped in colour, Maine is an excellent destination for a fall road trip. The mountainous state is one of the only producers of maple syrup in the US, and maples happen to be among the most stunning tress come fall. Visit towns such as Naples and Bethel to take in some of the elegant local architecture too.
Ohio is another favourite for admiring seasonal foliage, and is home to the Appalachian Fall Foliage Driving Tour that snakes through some of the finest areas of natural beauty in the state, and takes in some of the Ohio River Scenic Byway along the way. Visitors should include a stop at the town of Marietta where you can take a riverboat tour and admire the scenery from the water.
Since the weather tends to get increasingly chillier towards the end of the year, particularly in northern states, you need to make sure you're all kitted out to survive the chill, winds and potential downpours. When attending festivals, some of which involve traipsing through corn fields, you also need to keep your feet dry and mud-free so wearing a pair of rain boots is highly recommended.
