ED or erectile dysfunction is a sexual disorder in males who cannot attain an erection or maintain one in sexual performance. It may be caused by either physiologic or psychological factors. Physically speaking, since erection is produced through the entry and retention of blood in the penis, physical reasons to prevent such flow and retention of blood will induce erectile dysfunction. Psychological reasons may be due to traumatic experiences, feelings of inadequacy, etc. Whichever cause, erectile dysfunction is a critical disorder or dysfunction for any typically virile male. Its onset affects the male’s notion of virility, potency, and masculinity. Erectile dysfunction can cause grave psychological feelings of shame or inadequacy.
Whatever the cause, men would want to treat the erectile dysfunction right away, as it not only affects their relationships with their partners, but the personal toll on their morale and egos may be devastating if the ED is not addressed. In addition to the psychological aspects, the physical aspects when addressed will redound to a general healthier condition for the males.
Where erectile dysfunction sets in, most men choose to be silent about the disorder for fear of embarrassment, but this should not be the case because the dysfunction is treatable by medication.
Drugs for the treatment of ED
There are a number of drugs used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction depending on the cause. For dysfunction caused by deficiency in hormonal production, supplemental testosterone may be advised. If the cause for example is a disease, another drug will be used. Where the cause is due to the lack of blood supply to the penis (as erection entails the adequate inflow of blood to the penis), then again another set of drugs will have to be introduced.
The more common oral treatments for erectile dysfunction are sildenafil, vardenafil, and tadalafil. These drugs are PDE5 (or phosphodiesterase) inhibitors. Sildenafil is more commonly known as Viagra, while vardenafil is Levitra, and tadalafil is Cialis. These are prescription drugs but generic counterparts of mostly herbal essence are also widely available. As PDE5 inhibitors, they inhibit or prevent the action of PDE5. PDE5 causes specific phosphodiesterase type 5 CGMP to degrade. With such degradation, blood inflow to the penis is hampered.
There are also new, controversial drugs that have been developed for erectile dysfunction but unlike Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis, these drugs have not been approved for mass consumption as treatment for erectile dysfunction. Some of these drugs are naltrexone, bremelanotide, melanotan, and enyte.
Levitra -- Better than Cialis and Viagra
Levitra is vardenafil, a drug developed by Bayer specifically to address erectile dysfunction in males. Vardenafil is a PDE5 inhibitor and as such is similar to function with sildenafil and tadalafil. Vardenafil though, in this case Levitra, takes effect in a shorter time compared to Cialis and Viagra because of vardenafil’s molecular structure. Vardenafil is an oral medication that when taken allows for the increase in blood flow to the penis in times of sexual stimulation. With the increased blood flow and retention, erection is attained and maintained. It should be noted though that vardenafil is not an all-out cure for impotence or erectile dysfunction; it is also not used to increase sexual desire. Moreover, vardenafil is not a birth control drug and will not prevent pregnancy. It will not stop the spread or transfer of STDs or sexually transmitted diseases like HIV AIDS.
