Quick! What is the most controversy-provoking topic you can think of? Chances are you said, "homosexuality." Well, sexuality is itself a matter of controversy. So, when some people view same gender sex sin, it is bound to evoke strong feelings in many people on both sides of the fence. In this article, I would like to address some of the issues and perceptions regarding gays.
One of the issues that faces the homosexual male is that they are always seen as a club-hopping flamboyant group. I think that impression is a result of the fact that the more bold and open homosexual man celebrates his sexuality openly. As a result the conservative male gay is not considered when developing this perception.
Gay groups are also seen as hyper-activist. Given the extent and form of discrimination they face, it is natural for them to take up activism. But it is only a small minority that actually fights for gay rights. Again it is a case of getting to see only one set and making conclusions about the entire population based on that limited info.
Since a significant proportion of human population is homophobic, primarily owing to societal conditioning, most gay people find themselves facing an uphill task when it comes to expressing themselves sexually. There are many social situations that the heterosexual person takes for granted that the gay person would have to struggle with.
The general belief associates emotionalism with women more than with men. And men are supposedly more physically oriented than women are. If this is true what would the relationship be like when both partners are on the same side of the fence? Would there be better understanding of each other's desires and preferences? Or would there be a futile and highly familiar relation?
Interestingly, when one thinks of male homosexuals the topic of AIDS and HIV comes up really fast. But there have been many reports that this social group was one of the first to get very aware of the potential threat of disease. As a result they probably were the ones to get into the mode where protection became the norm.
As society progresses, all cultures are witnessing a general trend of increasing liberation. In most instances, this secular trend to liberalization is helping gays come out and express themselves. But it is still no cake walk. Will we soon reach a world where people will accept homosexuality? Or will the rabid counterforce win with its "against nature" agenda? I guess this is one of those things that one has to wait and see.
