Dental care problems are one of the top dog health issues. But is your dog is at risk? Follow a few simple steps and your canine’s teeth will be in tip-top shape.

Regular Vet Check-Ups.

When my vet pointed out my miniature schnauzer needed to get her teeth cleaned, I admit…I had sticker shock. But then I thought, ok that makes sense. People need regular cleanings, why shouldn’t dogs?

I can now tell you that regular dental cleanings make a huge difference. My dog has better breath, and doesn’t suffer from painful gum disease.

But just remember, when considering dental cleaning…shop around. I found there can be price differences depending on which vet you visit.

Home Care. Are you a little freaked out about brushing your dog’s teeth? Don’t be…you can make it fun and easy.

First, purchase a dog toothbrush and dog toothpaste. You may be wondering, why shouldn’t I just use a human toothbrush and toothpaste. Well, human toothpaste contains fluoridate which can be harmful to you dog. And dog toothbrushes are uniquely designed for a canine month. So you’ll remove more of the plaque.

At first, you can try using your figures. Just so your dog gets used to something in his mouth. Eventually, graduate to the toothbrush. Try to do this once a day and always give your dog a reward after you’ve finished. He’ll grow to love this ritual. However, be patient because it may take time.

Make Dog Dental Care More Fun. Ok, you’ve gotten his teeth professionally cleaned…and you brush daily – what else can you do? The next part is fun. You can give dental bones and chews. Use these as an alternative to cow hooves chews (which damage canine teeth).
