This article describes the most common Acer Laptop Problems. If you're thinking of buying Acer laptop computers in the US or UL, then I suggest you to read about the main Acer laptop problems before you buy.

There is an alarmingly large number of problems being described by Acer owners on different blogs and forums over the Internet. Some owners' Acer laptops have gone completely unusable, with signs of power or mother board failure. The machine will now not even turn on and if the warranty has passed, you will be facing some major issues. Acer has been notoriously difficult in communicating such problems with clients, the customer support is not very helpful and they don't reimburse too often. If you do a little research online, you will see a lot of people complaining about problems with Acer Aspire. Acer laptops are not cheap and should definitely provide far better quality for that money.

Another common Acer laptop problem is "getting the blackscreen." It appears that the LCD displays have the backlight (usually a cold cathode) burnt out. The repair typically consists of opening the monitor replacing the cold cathode tube and reassembling the unit. But before you go on to such decisions, make sure to check that you haven't just accidentally turn off the backlight. On Acer laptops, pressing the Fn button and F6 at the same time is the backlight on/off togle. Holding the Fn button and pressing the left/right arrow keys raises/lowers the backlight brightness. Another commonly reported problem about Acer laptops is USB port failure. Some owners have complained about the USB ports not working. Even after reinstalling the drivers, they still don't work.

There are cases when an Acer laptop would develop a fault with the HDD (Hard Disc Drive) where windows could not find the disc. The only fix here is getting a new hard drive and this would cost you around $200 if the warranty period is over. You should definitely report that problem and send the machine for repair. Acer would charge you more, but this a repair that even you can do by yourself should you be knowledgeable enough of course. Another problem is what's known as "the click of death." It can happen on a brand new model if the hard drive is making lots of clicking noises, which is a sign that the disc is not keeping the correct speed.

A problem was recently discovered in the charging process of Acer Travelmate 2702WLMi laptop. When powered down, the charging only works intermittently. The charge light comes on but then randomly blinks on and then off etc. The result is that it takes forever to charge. This is a common Acer laptop problem that has got something to do with overheating. One of the fans can all of sudden stop working and as a result, overheating occurs. Make sure your laptop is not getting really hot. Another thing you can do is open it up and clear up the dust that's covering everything. Just remove the dust and it will work much better, because clogged-up heatsinks can affect the battery charging.

Some Acer owners have reported that the DVD burner has suddenly stopped working after the warranty period ended. The DVD-RW drive stopped burning to Disc and barely plays any dvds. This would normally happen if you have recorded a very big number of DVDs like a thousand, but shouldn't occur in other circumstances.

If your Acer laptop freezes, seek official Acer laptop support. In case suddenly your Acer laptop shuts down, check the Acer laptop troubleshooting manual.

oh gosh! i bought an acer laptop and i don't have an idea that it will cause plenty of problems. i'm so excited in having a laptop that's why i didn't have time in researching about the problems that it causes. i've experience having a difficulty in pressing some keys in the keyboard and now, the spacebar and letters m and w is not working. but the weird thing is that, even if i didn't press any key, letter w will show up many times like wwwwwwwwwwww... i don't know what's the problem with this. and then, i thought the battery will last for about an hour if it has been charge. but when i used the laptop without the adapter, for about a minute, it is now lowbat or low battery.

My Acer has lots of issues. Sometimes you will be typing and you look at what you typed, and half of it typing thru the middle of the sentence you typed. The cursor goes crazy all the time. (won't go where you want it, etc) Last night, I had it plugged in while using it, and said you have 5 minutes until no power. It also said I wasn't plugged in. So I had to restart, to get it to show up and charge.

I bought a aced aspire 1642 about 2 years. Was told it was a great laptop. Not! We have all issues with this laptop. Main issue we can no longer use it at all I'm actually sending this info via my iPod . The biggest problem is the charger .the said we must send out to fix and could cost 300 or more for that price we decided to buy new. Aced computers are continuous problems. I hear dells are problems. Think I gonna do some research on gateway. Trust me your experience with gateway will be no different. It sucks!!!!

Hi, Acer laptops are very reliable, but yours may develop a problem with the charge circuit, after a few years of use. The laptop will charge itself to fully charged, then the charge light will go out and the laptop will continue working on the battery, not on the mains. This is not the charger being faulty. It's the power circuit inside the laptop. To keep using the PC, power down the laptop and remove battery. Re-insert the battery and boot up the laptop, all on the battery, if it's charged sufficiently. Start charging the laptop, but do not fully charge it. Stop charging and continue on the battery, then before the battery goes completely down, charge again. Don't charge fully again, but stop charging before it is fully charged. Continue in this way and you should be able to go on indefinitely. Good luck!

My Acer 5610Z, is 18 mos old, I am having issues with the dark screen only faintly seeing the desktop icons and such. I ordered and replaced the inverter this didnt work and now I am waiting on a backlight to see if this fixes. My husbands HP is twice as old no issues to this date. Acer will never take me again! People read up before purchasing a Acer laptop seems I made a mistake and hopefully you wont do the same. I will let you know if the backlight is a fix for me.

I just bought an Acer Aspire. The 1st one I exchanged because the letter Z was Y and vice versa. On the 2nd one, the point pad won't let me double tap to open windows and it won't download anything. It is now 32 days old. I have been online with Acersupport for 5 days now. They won't even give me an idea of what's going on. Every email asks for something new, 1st serial #, then model, address (again),then my COUNTY that I live in (not country, county, then where I bought it and on and on. Joke. No help at all on a 33 day old laptop. Perhaps they are waiting for the warranty to run out? DON'T BUY!!!

i have a good hp dv series laptop and acer aspire 5717z for my wife which is also good but on its 1st 3rd month.. suddenly it shuts off with no apparent reason. she restarted it, it didnt make it to OS.. knowing that it would take a lot of time of repair process if i send it back to dealer, i tried to fix it myself. i reseat the ram module and the hard disk, bingo! works fine again but for just 2 weeks.. i updated the bios from version 1.36 to 1.43. now its back to almost normal. the only problem we had now is that it wont restart. normal startups work just fine.. i wont buy acer notebook again.

I have an ACER Aspire 6930 LapTop. It was delivered with foreign language recovery disks. I had sent an E-Mail for support during the software warranty period. But, ACER only responded after the warranty was over and will not exchnage the disks. I should have bought a DELL.

I too have and Acer Aspire one and have been going back and forth with the online ( non support) for the last 5 days. Asking for various information that can be asked in the first email. Keep your money and buy another brand. I have had since 12/08 still in warranty and I will not be giving up on service since I can't get my money back and the computer won't turn on.

You're right, Acers are not cheap at all. I bought an Acer Aspire 7720-6681 7 months ago and for three months now the laptop shuts down cold as though the electricity just stopped mostly when I use a media/audio player it gets so hot in the corner where the fan is.

I don't think this is normal and it should not be doing this. But now I am stuck with this problem. For the same money I could have bought a Dell or an HP. I try to console myself into thinking that if I did buy something else, I might have worse problems.

To add to this, the Dolby speakers are a joke. The sound of the speakers is so low. Even media streaming is not clear, it is really awful actually - not sure where that problem is coming from...

And the screen is not clear at all - maybe because it is too glossy?

Acer Aspire - won't hold charge and has become so hot the case has warped and the battery won't stay in, basically rendering it useless. Occurred right at 13 months after purchase so it is past the warranty deadline, but from what I hear from others they don't do much about honoring their warranty anyway.

I bought an acer aspire. Everything works on it until I plug in my Sprint internet card then the keyboard and mouse quit working. Acer said this is my fault because I used a 3rd party hardware. My sprint card works fine on my dell. They said I should only use a wireless router. How am I supposed to connect to the internet when not at home. Isn't the idea of a laptop to be portable?

I have an acer aspire 6930 myself and I have had unexpected errors myself.

1. Using internet explorer and my computer must have gotten a virus because much spam came and then it didn't boot. By the way this is not related to any adult orientated sites.
Tried reinstalling vista but that was not even possible.

2. My LCD screen 3-5 months after I bought the laptop the screen has been jumping and I have sent it twice in for repair to the acer repair facility/ factory in texes still not fixed as of today, but will be.

Acer Owner Says
I read the article and almost wept. my ACER laptop barely 2 years old , crashed a few months back. It had keyboard problems from day one, the cursor slipping to places not intended. I took my laptop to the dealer, one of the most reputed Electronic companies in the middle east. They told me that both the mother board and the HD are faulty and that I would have to replace them. Having no other choice i did at an additional cost of US$350/-. They then gave me a warranty for one month. Well, guess what it crashed again yesterday. I am now left with a dead machine which has to date cost me over US$1300/-, and that too at a sale price. the Heartburn is rather unbearable. what recourse would you recommend?

I bought an Acer Aspire for school a little over a year ago and I was working on it one night in my bedroom with it plugged into a surge protector...so it was fully charged and running on the adapter, not the battery. Well, I turned my head for a few minutes to watch something on television and the next time I looked back at the computer, it had completely shut down. I tried over and over again to get it back on, but all my efforts were useless. The adapter light to this day when plugged into the computer just flashes repeatedly. We tried using universal adapters to see if we could get it to come on, but they won't work either. The guy who looked at it last said that there was a broken connection between the battery and the adapter...exactly what though I'm not sure. Acer of course automatically assumes any problem you have with a computer that just turns off and doesn't reboot is a motherboard problem. And like everyone else on here, my warranty had conveniently expired the month before my computer died. I only had it ONE YEAR! Anyway, I'm going to order a new battery and see if that will help. If that doesn't do it, I think I'll just have to let it go and buy another computer. It's a shame though, cause this one could do EVERYTHING.

I suppose I have been fortunate. My ACER Aspire 6930 is about one year old and the only problem I have had was that the VISTA 64-bit was installed in French. Acer was not help at all, I am awaiting Windows 7 in October. I ordered Windows 7 in English and I hipe that this will cure the problem. If you think VISTA is complicated, try reading the menus in French!! Anyway, my Aspire 6930 has run like a charm so far. Maybe when it becomes one year & one day old ( and the warranty expires) I'll have a different story. Stay tuned for updates.

i have an acer aspire, it came with vista and so many problems it was useless. i installed xp an it got a bit better. cd drive would dissapear at random intervals. usb problems. startup and shutdown problems. overheating problems. last night, it just switched off instantly for no reason, now it will not switch on at all. i press the on button, it lights up , the fan starts, then it switches off, then back on, then off... until i unplug it and pull the battery out.
my advice to anyone thinking of buying an acer is pretty obvious. you would have less problems making your own computer from oil, sand and metal. be warned!
