Having performed over 60,000 surgical operations, Dr. Thomas S. Tooma is contented with his refractive surgery practice now. He is regarded as chief researcher in Excimer Laser Technology and has trained hundreds of eye doctors for refractive surgical operations besides certifying quite a few ophthalmic surgeons for Excimer Laser Surgery. Dr. Thomas S. Tooma had the privilege of participating as well as attending several national and international conferences as the speaker and surgeon.

LASIK is referred to as abbreviated medical term for Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis - a type of refractive laser eye surgical operation which is exclusively performed by the qualified ophthalmologists who have educated to rectify Myopia, Hypermetropia and astigmatism. LASIK surgery involves few minutes and is practically pain-free operation. Simultaneously LASIK procedure is far better alternative as compared to Photorefractive Keratectomy-PRK. Majority of people across the world have gradually started preferring LASIK surgery for correcting their vision and getting rid of wearing glasses or using contact lenses. Such persons get sharper vision quality after LASIK operations.

Looking back to 1960, Jose Barraquer of Colombia invented the first ever Microkeratome which he used for cutting the thinner flap in cornea for correcting its shape through the method then called Keratomileusis. But an Indian named Rangaswamy Srinivasan, during the year 1981 declared that the ultra-violet Excimer Laser can easily yet precisely scrap the living tissues completely without damaging the thermal in the surrounding areas. He then termed this very technique as Ablative Photo Decomposition-APD. He along with his team initially used the Excimer Laser and the traditional green laser beams for scraping the organic elements. The green laser beams generated rough slits damaged by burning due to the heat while the Excimer Laser resulted in neat and clean slits.

Further during the year 1983, Rangaswamy Srinivasan joined with an ophthalmic surgeon for developing APD for scrapping the cornea. This was followed by the development of LASIK surgery in 1990 by Lucio Buratto an Italian in association with the Greek named Loannis Pallikaris who combined both the earlier techniques of Keratomileusis and Photorefractive Keratectomy which achieved faster recognition because of its precision and lesser obstacle frequency as compared to the earlier procedures.

Precisely three vital stages are required to be taken care of in the LASIK surgery like: Pre-operative, Operative and Post-operative. In the Pre-operative case the intending patient is suggested to give up using contact lens or glass ten days prior to scheduled surgery. Cornea surface is then examined with Pachymeter which develops topographic map of the cornea through low-power Laser beams, for determining the precise shape. Then the surgery is done without using anesthesia leaving the patient fully conscious. Just some anesthetic eye drops and sedatives like Valium are given to the patient. Such surgery is done in two different steps like generating the corneal tissue flap with the help of metal blades and then corneal stroma is re-shaped through 193mm Excimer Laser technique. The patient is prescribed the antibiotic medications and anti-inflammatory eye drops treatment for a few days after the surgery besides wearing dark glasses for protection.
