Cheap car insurance isn’t too far out of your control.

There are measures you can take to reduce your premium that you perhaps didn’t realise affected the cost, this article is a first in a series of 3 covering our top tips to lower your car insurance.

- What level of cover do you really need?

- It’s good to know that you are completely covered, and the way in which you can achieve this is to opt for a fully comprehensive level of cover. However, because this is the top level of cover that you can buy it is often the most expensive. So how can you reduce this cost?

- Have you considered any Third Party Only cover? It doesn’t cover your vehicle in an accident but does however reduce the cost of your premium dramatically. If you are a confident driver this may be an option you wish to consider. This is the cheapest level of cover but is also the lowest level.

- Some middle ground is achieved in opting for a Third Party Fire and Theft policy. It covers third parties in the unfortunate event of an accident but also covers your vehicle in the event of a fire or if your car is stolen. This level of cover is often more expensive than Third Party Only, but cheaper than Fully Comprehensive.

– Voluntary excess – what’s this then?

- The amount that you are willing to pay yourself in the event of an accident. The higher the amount you are willing to stump up, the more your premium could be reduced. The logic is quite simple, the more you stump up in the event of a claim the less the insurance company has to pay out. The reward? A reduction in your premium. A compulsory excess may also be put in place by the insurance company as to how much you have to pay for damages in the event of a claim in addition to the voluntary so be sure to check just how much you would have to pay in total!

Now all you need to do is grab yourself a cheap car insurance quote and see how much these tips could save you on your car insurance!
