Stretch marks affect millions of people worldwide. Here are the most common myths about stretch marks.

Myth One: Stretch marks only occur in women.

While it is true that around 90 percent of stretch mark sufferers are actually women you may be surprised that it is a relatively common condition in men also. Any man, woman or child who loses weight quickly or gains weight quickly is also affected. That is why body building stretch marks are so prevalent.

Myth Two: They immediately go away once you lose the excess weight.

While it is true that it is possible that your stretch marks will fade naturally when you lose weight once the skin has been stretched it is much thinner and it is very difficult to return to normal unless you do something about it.

Myth Three: There is nothing you can do to prevent them.

That actually is not true at all. There are a range of topical creams and lotions that are applied directly to areas of the body that are prone to get stretch marks - hips, thighs, buttocks, breasts - and the right cream will actually increase elasticity in the area and strengthen the skin so that in the event of a stretching of the skin (say with pregnancy or weight lifting) marks won't occur.

Myth Four: The only way to cure them is with laser cosmetic surgery.

While laser surgery is one way of tackling these ugly scars head on they are not the only way. There are a range of natural lotions that contain potent herbal formulations that have been specifically designed to help get rid of them.

Myth Five: Having them won't affect your life.

Unfortunately this too is not always the case. If you let them they can have a psychologically impact on many facets of your life, starting with your self-esteem, overall body image, self-confidence and sexual confidence. Therefore, they can affect one's entire life.

Myth Six: There is no way to cover them up temporarily.

That is in fact not true. Some people use foundation or do it yourself tanning products to hide them. While this does nothing to get rid of them and is more of a temporary solution, they do allow sufferers to wear some more revealing clothes if they so choose.
