Sat Nav

What is Sat Nav?

Satellite Navigation or Sat Nav for short is a way of giving the user their precise location. Originally designed for Military use, the use of Sat Nav has become widespread around the world for all types of uses, such as in the automotive and marine industries.

Sat Nav is not a new product. It has been around for quite some time, mainly for the Military, but only recently it was developed for non-military uses. Sat Nav works in tandem with satellites in space. These satellites send a signal to the GPS receiver. When the numerous satellites send a signal, the Sat Nav can work out the exact position, and in turn direct you where to go.

Main features.

The main feature of a Sat Nav is to give you your exact position. When you have your position, the Sat Nav can then work out the best route to your destination. You can in putt the destination and off you go! Most of Sat Navs on the market are touchscreen. The screens themselves are easy to use and uncomplicated. There is also a search destination option, which permits you to choose your destination.

Depending on the Sat Nav you choose, other features may apply. Sat Navs have become very technologically advanced. Many can double up as a car kit. These can receive incoming calls and text messages and also allow you to make calls and texts. While other Sat Navs come equipped with MP3 players, slide shows to show your favourite photos of friends and family, and also up-to-date traffic details. These traffic details may prove important if you’re in a rush, as you may have to change your route. Thus saving time and effort.

Another important aspect of Sat Navs is their size. As they are small and compact, they can be taken out of the car or vehicle and carried either in your pocket, rucksack or even handbag. This will also make your car less attractive to thieves. Taking the Sat Nav out of your car gives you an additional bonus. Should you be in a unfamiliar location, the Sat Nav can be used while you are walking, perhaps on vacation in a different city.

While driving, other features become important. Sat Navs can also tell you where to go. This turn-by-turn features, allows you to concentrate on the road ahead, while the Sat Nav responds with commands such as "Turn left in 200 metres". Mapping.

The maps on most Sat Navs are fairly detailed. This is obviously important if you want to get to a remote location. Most maps are pre-loaded and reflect a specific area. Some Sat Navs may only have maps for certain areas, for example Western Europe; while others may be much more detailed with perhaps North America and Europe.

Due to the detailed mapping on the majority of Sat Navs, Emergency Services have begun using them. They can guide the Emergency Services to a location quickly and removes the nightmare of getting lost and wasting valuable time when it is needed most.

Newer versions of the Maps can be downloaded. This ensures you have the most up-to-date mapping, and gives you the best chance of not getting lost.
