What is Eczema? Eczema is a chronic, recurring and very itchy inflammation of the skin, which usually begins when you are young. Also referred to as "atopic eczema" or "atopic dermatitis", eczema affects about 10 to 15% of the general population and is now more common than ever. It is easily diagnosed by dermatologists, however, and often shows up in the first six months of one’s life, with occasional or frequent recurrences thereafter. Eczema usually comes with an increase in the serum Ig E level, a sign of more immunological activity.
What causes eczema? Although there is no one definitive answer, it seems that eczema is caused bygenetic, immunological and skin barrier defects. Other factors might worsen the condition, such as a less effective natural skin barrier, which allows more water loss. Increases in skin bacterial infections are common. A common diagnosis of eczema is when the skin in different locations in the same person also vary in appearance, changing with the severity of the condition in that specific area.
People who suffer from eczema often feel isolated and/or embarrasses, particularly in social settings. It is common for those diagnosed to suffer from lack of sleep or disrupted sleep patterns, with daily activities of most victims adversely affected as a consequence.
Eczema works hand in hand with dry skin to further aggravate those afflicted. That is why many people search for Eczema skin care products or for Eczema care services. There are several things you can do, for example, to control dry skin. These include moisturizing your skin daily, wearing cotton or soft fabrics and avoiding rough, scratchy fibers and tight clothing, and taking lukewarm baths and showers, with mild soap or non-soap cleanser. In latter cases, it is best to gently pat your skin with a soft towel instead of rubbing, and to apply moisturizer within three minutes after bathing, to "lock it in". This is why it is so important to have a good skin care product.
